Ugly site has better CTR? Conspiracy theory? Make site uglier?

Friends were comparing sites (similar niche). Found out that ugly designed site (difficult to see and navigate, no graphics design) gets high CTR, over 10% (and user probably clicked mistakenly or just wanted to be out), while another nicely designed site get only about 1% (about double the PV). The earning difference is $50 a day and $10 a day.. So should be make the site uglier?

The traffic are all from search engine, the return rate is about 8% vs. 10% (nice site)..

Not really. If your site looks ugly, google may not like it, and you'll have the chance of being smart-priced.

There CPC are very close, ugly or nice.. I don't think Google can detect webpage elegance. So the jury is still out their, an ugly site, which cause reader some pain, ending up getting more CTR.. and CPM.. Is that a flaw in the system?

i agree with dp 2009 i would say make site ugly (narrow the space b/w content and adsense) match the adsense with content in an ugly style that sometimes it's hard to discriminate b/w internal links and adsense URLs. Ugly not means low quality content or bad internal linking structure!!!

Just keep it quick - thats my rule.
Nothing too flashy or over the top! Give the content immediately (with ads) and see what happens.

Some of ugly looking sites are made to have their visitors click on adsense as they'll find that the ads seems more helpful than the site's content. Be careful as it is a part of blackhat.

Many of my sites are plain. Some are ugly. I honestly believe that users see an unprofessional website as somehow more sincere. Also, many times the ads are more interesting than the content they came for.

It can be a gamble because if you have an ugly site, you might get a click but that would be the last click of that user :). s/he wont return ever again.

That's really the point, though because you are looking for the adsense click, not list building. And yes, my ugly/plain sites are not db driven and load wickedly fast.

I think design takes a good role, but what matters the most is where you put the ads (call people's attention), that's what will generate a better CTR IMO.
