How to Optimise Title Tags for Sucess!

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by Michaelr, Apr 6, 2009.

I have been doing alot of experiments with the title tags on my webpages to see how it effects each sites search results. The results have even surprise me!

I have been trying to get my glamourrideweddingcar website in the top 10 for the keywords "wedding cars melbourne"

The title started with something like Glamour Ride Wedding Cars Melbourne and was coming in at around postion 50.

I then add alot of extra repeating words and had the site shoot out to around position 90.

I then cut the title down to Wedding Cars Melbourne and it hit postion 13.

The things I found out from doing this is:
The more words in the title the more each word is devalued.
Repeating words had no extra value.
Putting the location second gave better search results because searches are done that way.
Putting the keywords at the start of the title gave better results.
Using multiple keyword expressions in the title diluted the value of each one.
Having the exact keyword expression only gave you the best result for that keyword.
Now just so this is no fluke I have been doing the same on my other sites and have seen massive fluctuations with the best results with the exact keyword phrase and often no more.

Now the further down the search order you are the greater impact a major change of title can have. The closer to number 1 position you are the lessor impact you have because other factors are coming into play with websites that are very strong in seo. It will really depend on the gap between your sites and other to what effect title will have.

A good way to approach any change is to create a title that is as small as possible with out any useless words in it that will dilute the value of the keywords,

Example "Glamour Ride Wedding Cars - We supply the Melbourne Metro Area"

The Word We supply the Metro Area devalue your keywords.
The company name Glamour Ride at the start also devalues you keywords (your brand name is usually one of a kind anyway and should come up 1st in searchs where every you place them.

Once you have found a new search positon (if at all), see how many other keywords you can add before your site drops down rankings. They way you'll know how many keywords you can play with.

Now that I have found postion 13 I have built links and pushed the site to position 8 on the first page.

    I hope this helps!

Great investigation. I have found this involves the site H1 tag. If you are using a cms as wordpress, depending on the template you use, H1 tag can be your title or not and can include a link to your homepage or the article. The most usual I have found is:
    <H1><a href="PERMALINK">TITLE</a></H1>
    Code (markup):
Maximum characters in H1 tag can be up to 80, however is recommended 40. In the above case this includes the link.

Well I can tell you from my experience that it all depends on the keyword density, the content, the description and the number of backlinks and of course the other competitors.

I have success with titles that have the keyword repeated 2 times.

great info, I use the same way for my blog too :) , I strip my blog's name from the title, its better than before

Another title optimization is to capitalize the title. I have some pages in 9th position of first search result page with capitalize text, and have a lot traffic from it. People usually read entire page first, when they see a title with all capitalize text, visitor will find it interesting to click.

For me quality of content, count of links and density of Key words, worked well. Other than that, your thread is even nice for beginners. Thanks for info..

I have been working with a certain site and honestly at first I was having a hard time looking
for the set of good keywords and how am I going to combine it and produce a good result.
I did not focused on the volume of search of keywords but rather I based my keywords on
the relevancy of the site. I select 15 kws and mixed the first keyword in the title of the company
and then mixed the main keyword in the description. Then I do some basic SEO I have been able
to reach the top 100+ position in Google in 3 weeks. ^_^

    Hi,
I am glad to help you that in my opinion, the best title tags for success of business have to be choose until and unless we know the importance of title tags and the mistakes which we have to avoid while choosing tags. So my friend there is a list of importance and mistakes are as follows:

    Importance of title tags:

Title tags play three very important roles:
    * First, title tags are very important from the search engine point of view. Search engines place a great deal of weight on these tags (and use these tags to gather information about an website) in comparison to other website features.
    * Second, many major search engines such as Google and Yahoo! display title tags of a web page as a heading in their SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) followed by a brief description of the content were the keywords appear.
    * The third most important function of title tags is to help the user in finding out which page he is on. Almost all popular browsers including Microsoft Internet Explorer, display title tags on the top bar as well as the bottom. Firefox 1.0 uses title tags to describe 'tabs'.

Mistakes to avoid while optimizing title tags:
    1. Loading the title tag with keywords.
    2. Using keywords in the title tags that do not appear in the content.
    3. Using title tags that have no meaning or are not descriptive.
    4. Using the same title tags for all pages on a website.
    5. Not making use of proper capitalization.
    6. Not giving attention to the length of the title tags.

So my friend, if you pay attention on above list you will definitely choose the best title tags.
