I activated the Popularity Contest plugin on a WordPress 2.7.1 blog and get this error.

Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.

Is there any other good popular posts plugins for the sidebar?

    David,

There is a solution available on net for that plugin if you are getting this error. Not remember from where i have downloaded but after using that code change it works well for me.

Check with google search for that error.

I went ahead and installed the Wordpress Popular Posts plugin. Instead of using the sidebar widget I placed the code in the single.php template, but it appears to have screwed with the comments. Anyone else experience this?

You need to set up the HTML Markup for it to work. Read here for more details.

    Hope that helps ;)

I think you misunderstood what I said. It has nothing to do with HTML markup. I think the plugin is actually screwing with how blog comments are being displayed.

    Oh, sorry about that.

How is it messing with your layout, may I ask? It doesn't add any extra CSS, so I wonder.

Sometimes the comments are closed and other times the comments would display but for the wrong posts. I know its the plugin causing the problem because when its deactivated the problem is fixed.

Weird. I'll check it out as nobody had reported something like this before.

Where exactly have you placed the code in your single.php? Also, what are the theme and plugins being used on your site?

    Update:

Hey, found what the problem was and fixed it! If you want to beta test the dev version of my plugin please contact me via PM or leave a comment on my site.
