How Can I check if a site is No-follow or Do-follow?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by Kinkyjoe, Mar 27, 2009.

Just as the title says, Do-follow backlinks are much better than No-follow. Can someone tell me how can I find out if a site is no-follow or do-follow?

    Thanks

    It's quite easy...

If you're trying to determine if a Blog allows Do Follow comments then

    Browse to the blog site...
Click on the Comments link of a post that has comments...
Copy the hyperlinked name of one of the commentors into your clipboard...
    View Source in browser...
Search the source HTML for the page looking for the commentor's hyperlinked name...
Look at the link. It should look something like:
    - <a href="commentorsURL">Commentor's Name</a> or (DO FOLLOW)
    - <a href="commentorsURL" rel="nofollow">Commentor's Name</a> or (NO FOLLOW)
    - <a href="commentorsURL" rel="external nofollow">Commentor's Name</a>... (another form of NO FOLLOW)

Does it have a rel="nofollow" or rel="external nofollow"? If not then it is a do follow blog.

In fact, there are many reasons why a link may not be followed by search engines:

    1. the link may be nofollow (rel=nofollow)

    2. the linking page may have a tag no follow, no index
    META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">

    3. Acces to the linking page may be prohibited by a robots.txt file on the homepage

    4. The linking page may be a stand alone page, without any incoming link

Therefore, it does not help at all if you know that your link is dofollow or no follow since this concerns only case 1.

So, you may have some evidence of the real dofollow backlink when the linking page has a recent google cache.

Finally, you may be fully sure that you have got a real backlink only when you find it with your google webmaster account (>>external links) or with yahoo Explorer or similar tools.

Viewing the source code of the links is best but it does not tell you if the page itself is using nofollow tag. So do both: check the source code of the page and link.

    NoFollow links are highlighted red

If you are using firefox press ctrl+a then go to view --> source

search for no follow if its there that means it is no follow 1.
