This may be a long shot but I'm going to try and target a specific network with a script similar to Twitter where people can communicate easily. Anyone know any good free scripts that do something like that and are easy to install? Long shot, I know. Never ask, never get
I've considered the same idea and found this: http://www.revou.com/ but haven't looked into all the details nor tried it out yet - too many other projects going on at the moment.
why would anyone wanna start another twitter is beyond me. just use the one thats already started and monetize from it.
I wouldn't specifically want to start another "Twitter" but I like the layout and the short tweets. I believe in the niche that I was targetting, it would create a really good community boost.
Here you go buddy: popscript.com/php-scripts/social-network/php-twitter-pe-edition/prod_1006.html- - this one is priced 250 bucks. yonkly.com - Some online solution. Can use with own domain. Looks pretty nice. Free! laconi.ca/trac/ - Free open source solution. Can run on your own server.
once something orginal comes out on the market, and is a big success, everyone else trys to bum rush it, by then its too late, anyone could have come up with twitter, too late...im sure there will even be clone scripts, but that gold mine has already come and gone as someone had already thought of it first...
I wouldn't say I was "bum rushing" Twitter at all. I would say that I was capitalising on a system that people like. I'm not targetting another Twitter at all. I'm simply taking the short messages that are sent and incorporating it with another idea that I have.
If you can add a little something to it and definately not hint towards being a twitter alternative then it can sometimes work. Its often a challenge though as if people relate to your site because they are twitter aware theres often a chance they will be drawn to twitter more or first, even if you are going for a niche.
i don't see why niche sites would not work...i mean look at all the myspace niche sites? you are correct in that no one can compete on the level of twitter, but at a niche level it is more than attainable.
Lots of things get remade better and even more successful than the original. And lots of things get redone as smaller versions that also become successful on their own level. Google was not the first successful search engine It's true that poorly funded carbon copies don't do well. Or poorly designed repeats never take off. But with some tweaks and/or targeting, reused ideas can do very well.
