Articles with keywords linked to your site work best for me. Also very helpful to make links with keywords to internal pages, optimized for that keywords. That won't harm results you have already achieved.

Use 3 word Keyword for your Initial step.

Directory submission is the best and first step in Off page Optimization

Agree with previous poster. Start with a 3 word keyword. Build backlinks by posting a unique paragraph to mixx or oyax or similar, and place that keyword phrase within your paragraph, and as one of the tags.

Simply build links with the keyword you want.

You could acquire them from the link sales forum here. You could also sponsor contests and run some clever link bait campaigns.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by start with a 3 word keyword?

In regards to article submissions and backlinking for your targeted keywords, would it help your site as far as SERPs go for that keyword if it is not found on page?

using the OPs example: anchor text backlink "my testing" but that keyword is not found on the myexample.com page

Be sure to have your keyword in the meta tags too, especially the title. Then have it in the title of your article and mention it once or twice in the article itself. Then, when linking to it, make sure to use the keyword as anchor text.
