Is IE8 the end of the line for IE?

Actually it's the end of the IE rendering engine. They are considering taking on a differently engine (such as webkit (as in the one in safari) or the one in firefox).

Either way, it's a good move.

I don't think MS can drop IE as they have IE specific applications that will only run on their unsecure glitchy web browser, software like CRM Dynamics which you cannot run on anything but IE or SQL Reporting Services that is only displayed properly (and I use the word properly in a very loose way since the preview window with Visual Studio oftern shows the reports correctly yet IE can't) in IE.

Microsoft can't drop their IE browser without re-writing a lot of their software to support JavaScript rather than VB Script and ActiveX, and they're not gonna do that as it will open up the browser market to browsers such as Firefox and Chrome.

IE should have died a death a long time ago, instead it's gone down it's own path with it's own ideas of how browsers should be, which is now being brought back on track (all be it slightly) with the compatability modes in IE8.

I'll be waiting till SP2 before going anywhere near it.

The end of IE is different from the end of web browsers from Microsoft. Microsoft will probably always have a web browser no matter what engine it runs on and what name they choose to call it.

And they will package that web browser with their OS unless there is some court ruling that doesn't allow to do it.

I love IE. Not cos of its functionality but just for the fact that it was the first browser I ever used and let me into this wonderful world of web !

Yes. All the Microsofties point to that article written by a Microsoft employee. Of course, none of it is true but they love to point to it. Of course, if they would never read a factual "myth" article by people who know what they're doing.

One must also consider the percentage of users who do not know there is more than IE out there to use. I see and hear it on a daily basis in my line of work.

Wow, I didn't even realize people still use IE. Personally I'm a Firefox user. IE just has way to many glitches in it for me. I find that it frequently can't load pages that I visit often. It also seems slower than Firefox.

 

Both IE and FF are slow compared to Opera. Most people I meet who use opera say they wouldn't go back to anything else now.

 

Well, I think that IE is past its prime.
Microsoft launced IE as a Netscape killer and it worked 'cuz it was a free browser.....
But now, Firefox is da BOMB cuz of the cool add ons.
And Chrome rocks bcuz of the speed
