Having 5 % CTR is not a big deal. Try to change ads placement and test which placment gives more clicks. one day you will find a theme of ads to get best CTR

Take a look at the heatmap images provided by google & adbrite. They will help.

If your site is low on images, try an image ad in the middle of the right side of the page. Best converting spot I've seen for those.

Lots of content? put an ad at the bottom.

Forums etc? skyscraper on the left side. guests only

And you can also blend. Check this site of mine for a good example. Notice that people will have to look at the ads before actually using the tool. Things like that help! Though it works much better on pages where people won't be wanting to visit another of yours sadly :p

By placing the ads at places where the attention of the visitor is more and blending the ads with contents, you can increase the ctr beyond 5%. But remember, the traffic should be targeted; otherwise the chances of your ads being clicked are remote.

A report released earlier this month by comScore Inc. on behalf of Starcom MediaVest Group, a subsidiary of Publicis Groupe, and Tacoda, a unit of AOL LLC, stated that click rates on display ads were less than 0.1 percent. By contrast, comScore noted, Google search ads are clicked on 4 percent of the time.

So Googles CTR is 4%? and we can get 30-40%, how? how?

it totally depends on your site layout, niche, and visitors. forums get less CTR than blogs or sites. also proxy sites get even lower CTR than anything else. no matter what you do, you cannot get 30-40% CTR for forums or proxy sites. if you have a site with properly optimized ads along with 100% legit organic traffic, then you will get high CTR given that you have a content based site

place your 120x600 ads on the left column near the top. use no border on the ads, make the background and text the same style, color and size as the rest of the page. (make the url at the bottom of the ads blue)

Give the user no other option but to click on an ad or hit the back button. I have gotten 30%-40% CTR for years doing theses things. (40% -50% on Yahoo)

i got 15-20 on a site of mine. All you have to do is play with the ads placement. For example, I have places ads above a search box, very close to it :)
