Here an example on how to calculate PR, but it's an old one. Google might have changed the algorithm.

    The simple Formula is this:

You page rank is directly proportional to the number of sites link to you and the number of sites linking to the sites linking to you and so on....

First, understand this: PageRank is not SERP. What you--like every site owner--really want is to end up high in the search results; Page Rank is an ingredient of placement rank, but by no means all of it.

If you want to see what's what, install any of the myriad of tools that purport to show a given page's PR; then do some searches, on a variety of keywords, including but not limited to those appropriate to your site. See what PR the pages in the top 10 have. For highly competitive keywords, they'll doubtless be fairly high (though you might be surprised); but for niches--some bigger than you might think--some of the top pages will have low PR. The engines, especially Google, are good at determining relevance from content and on-page SEO work that makes the nature of that content plain.

All that said, the next thing to do is, again, search on your chief keywords. Start at the top of the results list and look at each site. For each, find the exact page on which your site would likely appear if that site were to link to you--it's wildly unlikely that that will be the site's front page. Note the PR of that links page. With those values, make a prioritized list of the top sites in your keywords zone. That list may--but well may not--correspond to the order of the SERPs themselves. Then use that list as a checklist to make direct contact with the site in whatever way seems appropriate so as to try to get them to link to your site.

I have found that it helps to include the exact page title and URL (and, where applicable, heading on that page) where you would like--or can reasonably expect--the link. That tells the site owner that you have at least taken the trouble to look at her or his site, and aren't just blindly bombarding everyone in sight with link requests. It also helps to say, in a few well-chosen words, why it makes sense for them to link to you (what is special or valuable about your site). Finally, include the exact link form you'd like, in HTML code, so you have at least a chance of controlling the anchor text; and, when you do that, do not be greedy with keyword stuffing.

And it helps if you have already provided a link (and not a "nofollow" link!) to their site, something you should mention in your request (but don't make it sound as if that somehow entitles you to a return link--try phrasing like "having noted your site as a valuable resouce about widgets (and linked to it), I am hoping that you might &c. &c.").

If you get no reply at all to a given request, wait at least a couple of weeks, then try again; note that you hope your earlier email didn't get caught in an email filter, or some such excuse for the remailing.

It's a matter of patience and grinding away, at least if you want valuable links from relevant major sites (as opposed to trashy at best semi-relevant links, which are fairly easy to get and probably do more harm than good).

With directory submission, it really doesn't matter what PR the homepage is ;)

You have to face the fact, that unless you pay for a homepage link on the directory site, you are not going to get a PR from it for at least one update, even then you may not. Just because you submit a link to a PR3 directory site, that doesn't mean you will get a PR3 backlink. In fact in most, if not all cases - you will actually be getting a PR0 backlink

Back link is important but if you add copied contents in your website then it will move to N/A

So add original contents and then add backlinks!!

This is the best formula I think!!

it all depends on the linking page / site and some times you will get a PR of 1 if you just a couple of bookmarks and comments on some blogs ;)
