To me when somebody posts using anchor text instead of their name, I find it annoying - even IF they contribute something great to the discussion. Remember, blog owners are trying to foster genuine dialogue and discussion about their topic, so the more you can keep in mind the rules of the road and be polite, the higher the probability that the blog owner will approve your comment.

I have no problems with people linking back to their sites, though. I just hate those obvious spammy anchor text links.

When I comment on other people's blogs I do so under my name. The links back to my site still carry lots of juice for my site so I dont' even worry about using anchor text all the time. There are plenty of more appropriate places to use anchor text - such as in your forum signature.

I have to agree with that. It is all about good content vs. spam content, regardless of the fact that you have left your link.

It depends on what you post in the blog comment. Blog commenting becomes black/unethical if your intention is to just drop link to the site. Write sensible and relevant comments.

Blog commenting can never be black hat...the most important thing is that you always submit or drop your link to the relevant blogs and you always post some relevant comments...there are many bloggers who just visit blogs or use some automated software and submit comments which is not related to their website...

Quick Answer: To start a conversation.

The basic premise of Ranking is that you will be rank based on how many sites or pages VOTES for your page by linking to you.

Commenting is a Vote that cast yourself, and that is not natural link building.

It cannot be called blackhat but it is not white hat either.

PS; I use blog commenting as a part of SEO strategy with my fly by night sites but never with my Big Sites.

But who owns the blog must not approve unrelated links.
I don't think its unethical unless comment is useful and related ..

I suppose because the reason you are doing it is to get a link, not to simply participate in the discussion. If you really want to just join in and are not bothered about a link, then you don't have to add one :)

That said, it is possible to make a genuine contribution to a blog comment, while still getting a link. But let's face it, most comments just say "Nice post!". That's unethical!

i don't agree with you. when i am participating in the conversation and contributing into it then i would like to be recognized. what i am offering and about my company as i am adding value to the conversation. i don't see anything wrong in it. but yes, those who add comments which is not at all relevant and adds no value then it is unethical

Until and Unless if you won't write unrelated or bad comments..You won't face any problems and if you do so it will be spam and often called as black hat...So be careful while writing comments on other sites..Thank you.

Is that you? Just Kidding :D.. I have been battling with this kind of Sites selling Game Gold and trying to pull away my readers to their sites, who sell game cheats that they get for free by copying from different cheat forums. Everyweek I reject 3-5 comments coming from Gold Sites..

    @Topic
In my opinion this manipulates search engine and might give a bad reputation to your PageRank making it appear like your connected to Gold Selling sites... Also Unethical..

i think it's not a blackhat as long as it is related to your topic and not spamming your blog post with bunch of links
