How do you get your site visitors?

I Was wondering how you folks went about getting visitors to your websites? Do you buy traffic from places like Google AdWords or try getting organic traffic? What about link trades and exchanges, have you or are you currently trading links with other site owners to boost your own traffic levels?

Do things like banner/button exchanges still work or do you think they are pointless using these days?

What about buying banner or button ad spots, do you think these are a good way to generate site visitors and if so, how do you judge where to pay for placements?

Those of you with an affiliate publisher program, do you use different methods of getting traffic to those than you do your regular websites?

Looking forward to seeing your responses :)

Just follow these steps and you can't go wrong...

    1) Post new articles about your site (no duplicates) in the appropriate categories on Digg.com

    2) Viral-market on Myspace & Facebook, using comments and private messages to as many users as you can

    3) Post on forums and blogs with your site's URL in your signature.

    4) Spread word of mouth advertising to as many people and Sports/Racing communities as you can.

    5) Have all your friends and family help you repeat the previous 4 steps.

My favorit ways to bring in visitors to my sites:
1- Post videos to video sites like Youtube, GoogleVideo, watermarked videos with your domain names.
2- Articles marketings. Do it persistently and write at least 5 articles a week.
3- Actively posting in niche-related forums.
4- Distribute free ebooks to all free ebooks sites, put your sites in your ebooks.

Well seen I'm a happyly webmaster, here are some tip.

*Time:don't just quit because u doesn't get any vistor, when time come by month u get it soon(for me,took me a year to get a decent visitor)

*Advertise:you don't need though stuff where cost money like adword, just try the simple link exchange,or mouth to mouth, that where I got all my vistor.

*Keyword:This is the most important, 70% of vistor come from seach engine(google, yahoo, ask, ect) so u need to put keyword on your website(u should proberly know how) what it about, news, cartoon, anime, just put the right thing but don't put too much, it gonna confuse many visitor.

*URL link:well of what I mean is if u joining a forum, put your link as signature, if u register in a game and in your personal information said what your website ,put it,what to hurt, in fact get many vistor from putting my link on youtube(not spamming but as a profile page)

*Reply/Comment:Visitor love it when the webmaster talk to them,so if anyone left u a comment or want to add u on yahoo,do it, it help your reputation and the mouth to mouth will continue on XD

    Here's my own simple formula-

Find what you do do well.
    Sell it to>>>
Raise money to outsource things you don't do well, like submitting to directories, social bookmarking sites and RSS aggregators, article writing, posting on blogs and forums.

I get tons of visitors from Twitter. According to Google Analytics, it's the main driver of traffic to my press release site. I just write a useful post and link to it on Twitter, saying something like "Here's My List Of Free Press Release Distribution Sites" or "Here's How To Get The Mainstream Media To Pick Up Your Press Release", with a link to my site. I've gotten several hundred visitors in a day doing this, and I get a LOT of press release clients that way.

I started my site on domain auction format its.asia a while ago. Received like 20 search engines referal for 5 months!!!!!

Why? because it was just a site without content. Now after adding content to the pages, lots of content to the forum, word of mouth through a domain name forum, and seo optimization on the title of the page, the meta optimization. For the first time, I got 7 referalls from search engine in 3 days.

Last time it was like 1 referal for every 7 days. Now its 2.3 referal for every 1 day.

Its about adding content. Don't waste your time or money on those directory submission. I did it, a long time ago, traffic was almost zip. If you dont' have content, wrong seo keywords, don't bother.

As they say, you don't build it and they will come, you must do alot of hard work manually to get visitors. I update my site everyday with content, and haven't rested. Very tiring. Hoping I can rest when I get like 1,000 visitors a day.

I place unique ads in other webmasters' sites.

I also advertise in magazines and in certain newspapers.

I thought about buying traffic, but I do it all myself, so....

Are you looking for more than a couple of hundred visitors a day? More like in the thousands, without that high bounce rate, and on a CONSISTENT basis, where you can make money? Well, you are going to have to advertise. There is no other way.

Word of mouth comes in second.

I never did Google, because of the competition, and the cost of it.

I don't trade links, because very very few look at them. I use my valuable site space for more productive things.

I have never tried banner exchanges, but the idea I came up with for my readers will work. I just haven't had the time to do it. They are definitely not pointless, if you do it right.

Organic trafiic is highly overrated. That is, if you are selling a product.

Besides, you have to be lucky enough to land high anyway. If you do, you get very minimum traffic.

Forums and EzineArticles. Gave up on everything else. Sometimes the simplest methods can be the best.

My page is online since 1 month, it's a difficult topic these days: "financial markets and trades". I invested a few bucks in adwords, and about 50 visitors came by clicking on them. that's ok. Forums and professional articles should do the rest. I still believe that an interesting site will be well-known at some point in time. Take your time with your new website and sum it up after 2-3 months earliest.

Focus on writing great content - the better the content, matching your keywords - ultimately the better the traffic. The content can be both on site and off (articles, ebooks, press releases, blogs etc) but it is the key in my view. If you just chase links, the quality get's compromised and this will ding you severely.

Most of my traffic comes from ranking well in google. After google, its yahoo and youtube.

For my forum, the top sources of traffic are direct, google, yahoo, a portal for my forum, youtube.

For my blog, its direct, google, yahoo, youtube, links from my forum signature.

On my best website my traffic is spread out signficantly.

    26% = Direct Traffic
    27% = Search Engine Traffic
46% = Referring Sites (I do pay for advertising on one site which brings me a significant amount of visitors)
