once you get your targeted SERP its toooo difficult to maintain.... as other site are being working for the same keywords...so be in touch with your competitors.....go for more quality back links.....

This is the nature of Google index. They call it "everflux". It used to be that you had to wait months for the SERPs to change with the Google Dance, but now they change constantly. The result is that pretty much everything jumps around constantly. However, I've noticed that the top 3 positions tend to be stable.

A major algo update at Google is going on. This may take some time to spread to all datacenters and for the SERPS to take into consideration the algo changes. Read Aaron's info on it at the URL below.

Snowbird is right, what you are all describing is not what is going on, the algo update has a different effect in that your site changes position (also based on the DC you connect to) it seems like hourly.
Even Big G with there systems cannot re-rank every site in the 20 top for every keyword combination every few hours. There is something greater at work. Question is how long will it take to settle down.

Check your google webmaster tools, and look for "what google bot sees" - that page will tell you what google sees are the most important keywords for your site. Its important to keep your targeted keywords in the top 5.

If the wrong keywords are listed first, you might be building your backlinks the wrong way.

    Guess on one is listening.

There is an Algo change happening, I just experinced this first hand for myself.

If you search on a keyword, like I just did, you can look at what sites are listed and in what order and then do that search again in 5 seconds and the order will change.

It appears mostly at the position 4 through 10 range.

This has nothing to do with competitors or back links, the changes are too quick.

Google has a lot of different algorithms and you will score differently when they choose to use different ones.
