What resolution do you design for?

I personally try to design for 800x600 still when it's feasible, and never above 1024x768.

I know 800x600 is the resolution of the dark ages, but some common users are still there and it would be unprofessional and ill advised to dismiss them.

Please vote, and express your thoughts.

 

I'm developing all my new sites to 1024x768. Looking to the logs for my most popular site, only 2.8% of my visitors have screen resolutions of 800x600. That's just too few visitors for me to worry about, especially when I could use the extra screen real estate for content, etc.

 

I think I'm going to make the resolution change too for that same reason.

I can't help but think my client might have 800x600 resolution, and be less than impressed by the horizontle scrolling he/she'd have to do when viewing they're new site. I suppose I will just have reassure them of the "2.8%" statistic.

 

1024x768 is the best choice - most of the users are with at least 1024x768

 

I agree with you on this. Tell your client to upgrade to the modern age and buy a new monitor.

Seriously though: You can certainly put more content above the fold if the site is wider. Reducing your visitor's vertical scrolling gives your a better chance at capturing that visitor's attention and keeping them on the site.

 

I always use 800x600, but sometimes i must use 1024x768 to make a design (minisites)

 

I mostly design for 1024x768px, but there may be exceptions such as PDA-optimized etc.
Around 40% of my visitors use 1280x1024 and same for 1024x768 resolution. 800x600 is used by only 1% of visitors.
Anyway, it depends of audience.

 

I keep 1024x768 in mind, but usually will make sure that the design doesn't go larger than 850-900px, or that it can resize itself nicely without breaking, just in-case.

 

1024x768 for sure. I modified my LAN website to be 1440x900.

well my resolution is 1280x1024 and thats what i design for... otherwise i wouldnt know if its right.

 

Generally, 1024x768, but since my design is less than that and is fixed, it shouldn't be a problem for any browser at all.

 

I used to design sites 800px wide because that was then standard for such a long time. I don't really think about resolution too much and make design a little wider than before, from around 900px wide to maybe 1020px wide, depending on how I feel.

 

When I start a new design I am always thinking of the technology the visitor has, well almost everybody has an monitor bigger then 17" and that`s why i am designing websites at 1280x1024 or bigger.

 

dnidol, I don't know of many "standard" web users that have bigger monitors than 17". Most of them are users of home PC's with 17" monitors and a surprising amount are still on 15" monitors. Also most laptop users are restricted to a 17" monitor at most.

 

I gave up on 800 x 600 about 6 months ago... since the most common resolution is now 1024 x 768 i am for that most of the time, though it depends on the requirements and what i'm designing

 

i think with the new netbooks (mini laptops) on the market it may be best to stick to the 8x6 standard being some of them dont offer 1024 etc etc like the eeepc etc
tho im on a 10" 1024 x 600 and godaddy.com is the only site that did NOT look normal but they just updated their layout and it displays perfectly now!just a lil slow as usual with godaddy

 

I design for 1024x768. Anyone using 800x600 should not be on the internet, or they'll use a computer so little that they won't think scrolling sideways is out of the ordinary.

 

Normally, I choose the following depending on the requirements:

- 800x600
- 1024x768
- Fluid

 

I design for 1024x768 because most common resolution is now 1024 x 768 (I think). Never go 800x600.
