jwomers, I agree.... exchangerate-api.com is definitely the easiest currency api I've been able to find. They don't have historical rates, but I guess for most developers with e-commerce sites that isn't really an issue. I'm currently using them on quite a large travel site I'm busy developing, and they seem to be very reliable, and easy to use.

But question... can anyone help me with an inexpensive API source for historical exchange rates?

I've been using a free developer API from http://thecurrencygraph.com. It's called Geo Currency API. It has loads of features, the main one converts currencies to the user's own currency depending on their location.

I've found it pretty simple to use, and exchange rates seem accurate.

    Try it here:

Not sure if this will help but we have created a currency converter in JS which is quick cut and paste code which can be styled to fit nicely on your website. You can learn more about our currency converter which is free to use by visiting http://www.forex-rates.biz.cet.htm.

This is not so much an API but I feel will closely suit what you are after and in real time.
