The standard plugin "Askimet" that comes with Word Press works just fine for me.
You know you can also just disable commenting from your dashboard settings, or when you make a new post, or change the settings a little to make it a little harder for spammers.

Uncheck the "Allow people to post comments on article" under the "Settings" -> "Discussion" headers.

Askimet is a best choice to avoid spam comments in WP

For all comments do what Mizak suggested.

You also have the option to turn comments off on individual posts ( option is available when you edit the post)

I am also getting spam comments on my blog!!!!

My blog is around 6 weeks old and has been fine up to a couple of days ago. I am now getting a load of spam comments and is there an alternative to simply 'stopping ALL comments'?

Askimet is brilliant, it catches around 700 spam comments every couple of days to my blog. Previously I was sick of having to spend hours deleting the comments, this gives me time now to do some serious SEO for my site.

Askimet does the trick for me. :)

Only about 3 a month get through now and I simply add them as Spam and they are added to the Askimet list for the future.

either use akismet which comes bundled with wordpress or disable commenting in the settings or individual posts, also set the option such that all comments need to be approved,

I also suggest you to go with Akismet Plugin instead of disabled comment feature in WP. Akismet doing really good job for me as well.
