Is there A Penalty For Duplicate Content? Here's my answer..

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by puzzle, Feb 23, 2009.

The top questions before you copy-and-paste your old PLRs into your blog and click "Publish" are:

    - Has this PLR used somewhere (duplicate content)?

    - If someone else is using the same PLR as I do, will I get penalized by Google? Will my site get banned/ get de-listed from Google?

    - Can I rank high with PLR articles?

To answer these questions, I run a small test on my site.

First, I posted two SEO related articles titled "Avoid Unethical Practices in SEO" and "A Beginner’s Guide to Keyword Research".

If you do a Google search, with " " (quote) and without " "(quote) for the first paragaph of these two posts, and you will see the search results as below:

Click here to continue with the story....
(Please refer to my blog for the results as too many screenshots involved :D)

what I like about that google replty is they say "…having duplicate content does not have negative effects on your site’s presence in the Google index. It simply gets filtered out."

Now excuse me, but what the hey is 'filtering out' if it isn't a 'negative effect'???!!!!

I think what they mean is it's not a site-wide penalty. It's simply that google won't show a page of identical results, so your site won't show for that query, but IS still in the index.

This has cleared up some issues I have been thinking about with duplicate content. I appreciate the input and discussion. Particularly with regards to the last comment.

It might get deindexed if you continue copying the content.

lol, just yesterday i was checking some Analytics Data and discovered that another site of mine got dropped to page 10 (it's getting worst everytime) BUT the funny thing is that at top pages i discovered lots of spammy sites. AGAIN. Guess what? Some of them ranking top5 have nothing but ripped content.

So i'd say you can rank high with duplicate content. Shameful.

If you're copying an entire website, if you're simply re-using plr articles, you won't get 'penalised' but you are also unlikely to show up in serps.

you're not getting it are you? You can rank high despite duplicate content. The sites you mention are up there at the top, and the 20,000,000 other spam sites using dupe content AREN'T

You undoubtedly can because something is going to show for that 'content' and it isn't necessarily the originating site. Something 'spammy' that's seo'd to the nth degree, to the point of black-hat can 'perform' better, but your average first-time affiliate marketer with his plr articles on his wordpress blog, won't.
(And as a footnote, it's another reason why c&ping someone else's blog article onto DP is such a scummy thing to do, as dp can rank better)

Duplicate content is having the same content on the same website/domain to make large number of pages which don't add more value to the website.

Having same content on several domains is not duplicate content. Like having the article on your blog and on many article directories as well.

You can rank high with plr content if you do powerful link building.

That is correct. It is merely a filtering which site is more "authorized" than the other.

go on then. Choose any story from Yahoo today. You've got 1 year to rank above Yahoo for that story. You'll fail. Epically.

    lol

i am gonna start a txt file with your posts. Do you really read what you write? Do you care to read what others said?

    Anyway,
There's lots of ripped content blogs ranking higher for no particular reason: not because they are old domains, not because they are trusted, but JUST BECAUSE Google let it be.

Google ranks them high even when they have 4 lines of text ripped from wikipedia. Some of them are 4 months old and rank very high for high traffic keywords.

Why? Because Google its a mess. Because Google ranks #6 a blog with 4 lines of ripped content and 3 Adsense blocks.

NOW, i know you sell content, so maybe you are all fired up because you need to sell the idea that ripped content gets you nowhere.

Know hat? Got news for you. Ripped content can get high rankings, more then it should.

    Is this correct? No.
Is this good for IM world? No.

    BUT its the truth.

It seems OK if you copy articles from multi sources.

i think duplicate content is duplicate..... though u copied it frm ur old pages......or any other pages.... which is already copyrighted by site owner.. the owner can report ur url to google webmaster tool...so beware abt it

and if this content are from ur old PLR, i think it will be taken as duplicate by search engine....
