What happens after the search engines become smart enough that pages won't need to be optimized for them? Will SEO just die? Or will it change?
It will always exist, but It will change and adapt you have to keep reminding your self that the the internet is still a baby not been around very long. Just my opinion...
What will there be to do in the future though? Build links? No, links won't really matter. On-page SEO? No, search engines will be smarter.
SEO will change, the behavior based search, personalized search and geography based search might be in the future scenario of search engines. I think SEO is vastly changing. How about an Intelligent web in the future ?
People/ companys who have got money invested in their websites are not just going to trust to luck. Search engines will always have some algorithm or other, seo-ers will try and understand those algos and make sure that the sites they are responsible for are compatible with those algorithms
SEO will live as long as search engines live if search engine dies then internet and seo dies by which whole internet will be destroyed ,so this a dream so SEO will nit die because internet will never die as long as humanbeing will exits on earth
Well this is it, I can't perdict the future otherwise I'd be a multi-millionaire! I'd just taking a guss that like most things google will over the years just tinker with there PageRank system to try and improve it.

SEO will always stay. SE will always show sites for a keyword in a certain order. This will happen by a certain logarithm so an optimisation will always be possible. Logarithms will change so people will adapt their seo methods
On Google it's already having a smaller "impact" on results compared to five years ago. Their method for indexing sites has changed, and therefore SEO is changing -- it may not even have any impact in the next five years. Of course Google could always change and it could be included again, but that's just my experience. LSI seems to be hot now with Google.
I hope LSI gets more important, along with other technological and linguistic improvements. I look forward to the day when the search engines can come reasonably close to actually "understanding" the meaning of a website's content. The closer they get to that goal, the more central good content will be, and the less important peripheral SEO techniques will become.
in the future internet crawlers will be so smart that there will be impossible to cheat them I think thre will be useless to build backlinks in the near future cuz Google will be able to track whether it's you who making these backlinks for your own site rankings You will have to leave your website for the fate of google and others to judje
seo will always be around, but in the future searches will be more and more localised, you will be able to add your location coordinates into google toolbar then if you google flowers then based on geo location sites will appear higher in serps solely because of their proximity
