Time to start buying 5L.coms?

    Hi guys.
I'ma regular browser in the Domains section, always on the lookout for a few bargains, and a thought hit me this morning:

ATM LLLL.com domains are selling pretty well, even if they make no sense at all and are just random letters strung together. I figured (like LLL) they'll all be gone soon, so surely now is the time to stock up on LLLLL.com domains, especially if they're pronouncable and/or brandable?

    Or not?

You should have already been doing that last year.

Ahh ok, so it is a good time to start buying? The other night I was just messing about on godaddy and found loads of pronouncable 5L.coms, but figured that if a domain reseller hadn't regged them, it probably wasn't worth me buying them either

What about the domains that are semi pronouncable? So they don't make sense if you say them outloud, but if you say them in parts they might work? And what about the domains that make no sense at all? Presumably in a few years time when you come to sell them they'll be worth more due to their age?

Unpronounceable, but readable domains are alright...

Proof? Look at the company name "Toys'R'us" - pronouncing that to someone would send them to toysareus... but everyone remembers it as it is once they know.

rational people thought same about LLLL.com. But people thought speculating in them was a good idea, and boy did that bubble burst. Maybe the level of ridiculous speculation will reach even higher levels in the future, who know?

My estimation is that people will begin using other domains away from .com .org .net...

I've used a lot of .co.uk's in the past, a few hyphenated domains too, and I've never had any trouble with traffic or anything... So I'd imagine that people will soon realise this and start spreading their wings and using all the domain extensions available.. Then we won't be so pushed for nice domains.

However, it might be an idea to purchase all the smallest .coms you can, as they'll always be the best.

An unpronounceable 3 char or 4 char is kind of ok. 5 is getting ridiculous. I'd rather go for something longer that means something.

Sarahk, I agree, it is ridiculous, but surely if that's where the market's heading then there's not much people can do about it. I bet in a few years time, LLLL.coms will be worth hundreds, while LLL.coms could be worth thousands!

Chuckun, I think it depends what market you're aiming at. If you're selling products to people from the UK, it's a great extension, but if you're providing info for Chinese people, it's probably not the best ;)

If you are doing this strictly for resale, you can get very creative with a combination of letters, and numbers and come up with some good domains.

A good example...I have a couple of music blogs, and Just last night I registered:
    TranceXTC
    HouseXTC
    and DanceXTC (ecstasy)

They make sense for my niche, and they were just sitting there. They don't make much sense the other way around, and I wouldn't have registered them if I had to settle for "XTC Dance", I was just lucky that they were available just as they are.

Too many people get caught up on trying to register something that could be brandable, instead of something that will be functional. Anyone with a large budget can brand anything they want, just look at some of the words that are now household names.

At this point, it is more about the creativity, than the number of characters for anyone looking for a domain for their business. I think a lot of domainers make the mistake of trying to register something that will be the next "Goggle", not realizing that it took millions to make it that way.

The more work it takes to market and brand the domain, the less valuable it is for an end user. No one wants to pay top dollar for a domain, and then spend $1000's, or millions more trying to explain it to people...it defeats the purpose when you can just register something new for $10.

I personally don't register anything unless it has a clear cut purpose or niche, no matter how many characters it has, and if I can't find it, I let it go for a while and come back to it. I don't have any domains that don't make sense. IMO, anything over 4 char's that doesn't make sense, spell something out, or abbreviate something, is a waste of money.

If you stare at any domain long enough, you can come up with some fantasy use for it in just the right situation, if the stars all line up and the temperature is exactly 68 degrees.

LLLLL.com will stay at fix price reg fee,, it can only be popular when almost all of the LLLLL.com's are gone.. And it seems impossible.. It won't give any opportunity or sale chance to it's owners, I'd keep away from them but, 3 char domains will get much more expensive for sure ;)

Many LLLLL.com are taken, but I don't think we can expect a buyout anytime soon. You'll do good with brandable LLLLL.com's, but they are already taken. So you might want to find your chance in the aftermarket.
