    I am a hostgator fan.

Been with them for 4 months, reseller account, and no problems.

If you want the "FASTEST" buy a dedicated server or get a good vps server.
Im pretty sure you can get a very fast vps server for around 15$ and a good dedicated server with a P4 3GHZ + 1-2gb ram for $50.

What a weird question; 'fastest'. Network? Servers? Support? Sales? What should be fastest. And indeed; what is your budget; if you have a typical 'DP' budget you'll get crap anyway, so just go for HG and forget about quality. If you have money and want real hosting then there are a lot of options that offer super quality.

Fastest ? if you live in Amsterdam and the server is in Holland will be all day fastest than 10 Hostgators united, the idea is your location in relation with the server location ( eliminating other problems ).

    Options :

1 - Choose a host fast for you - near you.

2 - Choose a host fast for your users, next to them.

IMO,there is no such thing as which host give fastest speed.
The speed of the host is depend on where the server is located.
If you targeted US market, then you should buy US hosting coz it should be fastest access via US.

I'm paying $120 a month for a similar server. Is this an actual quote from a reputable hosting company? If so, what's the downtime like?

    $120 for a P4... Jikes... That's a lot. I've had 100% uptime with these; http://iweb.com/dedicated/budget-servers/. But probably I've been lucky :)

You can try Burst.net ; shitty support but cheap as hell and if you can manage your own stuff you have no problem.
