If you want to register one then I can do it for you for free but you will need to place some ads of mine in header and you wont get access to domain panel you will just get domain redirected to your host.

    If interested PM me.

No registrars provide free .com domains unless they provide a very short term offers for registering domains for free. GoDaddy did this before 7-8 months.

For buying domains, name.com and directi.com are good.

It's NOT wise to use a free domain
or a domain you won't have total
control over, if you wish to do anything
    meaningful and lasting online.

    Besides a $10 .COM domain CAN'T be
cheaper. Or what do you think?

You can register any .com/.net./org domain name for $1,99 at Yahoo using this coupon:

    http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/domains/?p=BESTDEAL

This offer available for new customers and for first year only.
This is the most cheapest way to get a .com domain name, in case somebody still doesn't know (this offer has been valid for more than 2 years now).

Godaddy has the same promo offer for .coms, but unfortunately it's closed now...

And nobody will register you top level domain for free...
Use services like www.co.cc to get a "yourname.co.cc" subdomain, but you still won't have full rights on this domain, as it's provided for free.

you can't get a free domain :) especially .com, I've never seen a company which offers free .com unless you buy a hosting or something related.. I saw some offers which gives .biz for free in the past but not .com And why would someone give somebodyelse a free domain?

Register.com is offering free domains for first one year. All you need is a Paypal account or credit card for verification purposes.
