Could I live comfortably on $1,000.00/ month in India?

:confused:Just for fun I have been looking into my international living options. I am a disabled veteran and I receive $1,000.00 per month from the U.S. government. Anyhow, I have traveled around the world due to my military service and I was considering moving to a foreign country.

Could that amount of money stretch me far in India?

It depends on city where u want to live and also depend on how u define the word "comfort",$1k/month is average amount in most of the metro cities like Delhi,Mumbai etc,but yes u can live comfortably in most parts of India.

I don't drink and I love indian food. I don't require any luxuries and would prefer to live in the north maybe close to the Himalayas.

I am 29 and I served for four years in as a squad leader in a helibourne infantry company. (Marines)

I define comfort as being able to afford three meals a day, having air conditioning and an internet connection. I would consider teaching english or something to make a few bucks if needed.

It's interesting to hear that you could live comfortably with $1,000 a month. I don't think you could here in Australia. It's $250 a week, and that equates to what the average rent is for a house, let alone other expenses. Perhaps moving to India is the option ;)

    Well, 1K$/mo = about 40krs a month.

This is about 48000rs a year.

Well in that much amount, A SINGLE person would survive in India in most of the parts. If you go to Delhi and Mumbai, the owned House will kill you. The rents would start from about 20k-40k itself a month, and rest all luxuries would increase it much higher. It maybe less in some parts but most of it work like evenly.

As you are alone, i would probably go to Mumbai if it was myself in your place. Although its a bit crowdy there, the transport system wouldnt help you much.

It all depends on how much you are going to save and spend. If you come to mumbai the logic works like this.
you earn 300 and spend 50 and save 250. If you do it like that, then only you can survive in Mumbai.

    Hope it helps. ;)

I dont really want to scare you, but it maybe cold there and + you wouldnt get much facilities. You are basically totally on your own there. The metro cities are the main centres you should look for.

    Calculating properly,
    Rent:- 25k approx
    Food:- 3k
    Bills(water/electric/gas):- 4k
Some luxuries and other additions:- 5k

That saves you about 3k at the end of the month.
    (all calculations are in Rs).

The above calculations would be valid in somewhat good area where things are quite accessible but not that near. About 1/2 hour far from a center of facilities.

It might make your life comfortable. If you plan to live anywhere in India, I would rather try researching on the tariffs of the houses before you leave to India.

There is lots to do in the city centres, but compared to the remote areas there is nothing that you can enjoy in there.

But the end line is, no wonder wherever you go, you will stay cool in India. (no guarantee of being prosperous but you will surely stay alive there)

This may sound silly. How do people in India view foreigners, particularly Americans. Would I be welcomed there? Also, the reason why himalayans is because I enjoy walking and hiking. I always wanted to trek the area. Additionally, I am interested in Buddhism.

India is a secular country, All religion, race and caste are welcomed. No matter where they are from, they are all treated the same.

If you are interested in hiking and other stuff, then yes it is an ideal place to go for.

You may find many nepali's aswell near himalaya's. It would be a good time pass with them aswell. :)

I am living in north india and I can give you a rough breakdown.

As you have mentioned that you want to live near Himalayas, so Dehradoon will be a good city for you. Not to crowded and have all the infrastructure. Climate is also exotic there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dehradun

    $1k = 46K INR (Indian Rs)

I would advice you to rent a house and hre a cook and a servent for cleaning etc. Labour is very cheap in india.

    Lets have a breakdown.

    1) 2BHK apartment: 3K per month
    2) Food and groceries 2K per month
    3) hire a cook and someone to clean house etc: 1.5K + 1K
    4) Internet bill: max 2K per month
    5) Phone bill: 500INR per month. further depends on usage
    6) Electricty bill: 1.5K max
    7) Cable TV and other minor niulls: 1K max

Thats around 13K for basic good living.
So yo will have alot of money in hand to sped and save. :)

India is good place to live and enjoy. :)

I would choose Aguas Calientes, Mexico:

Its at a higher elevation where summer temperatures rarely get over 90 degrees, and many days are in the 70's.

They have a Costco in Aguas Calientes.

NOTE: This is close to where my wife & I plan to settle (Juchipila, Zacatecas -- about 90 minutes away)

One place I have often thought of moving to to get away from everything is Argentina... check it out. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Hell take out a $40,000 USD mortgage and buy your way into this place and put up a humble home... http://www.viviun.com/AD-95132/
