Directories that accept these sites... RANT

Directories that accept these sites... RANT

Recently I have seen many directories accepting these sites...

Cheap Sex Toys
Ecstasy Pills
Male Masturbator
Female Vibrators
Legal Highs US
Ecstasy Pills US
Legal Hallucinogens
Male Sex Toys
cheap adult toys

First off... what the hell are these smut sites doing co-mingled with legitimate family friendly sites? Do directory owners even look at the crud they list anymore? Why can't there be an adult’s only section if you REALLY want to list garbage. I have to wonder if some directory owners are so desperate for content and traffic that they have to list these.

It is no wonder why the directory industry has taken a hit in recent times because the integrity of some of them is teetering on sex directories. Maybe they could simply start a sex directory because some of them have only sex listings yet call themselves a general directory... General what? "General Sex and Smut Directory"?

Don't get me wrong here as I have nothing against sex but damn! A simple Internet search will get you all the sex you want without having to shove it in everyone's face.

So be honest here... if you are selling a family friendly product do you really want to be listed amongst "Vibrators and Dildos"???

To you directory owners who list anything and everything without so much as an eye blink, please do us a favor and get out of the business before you completely muddy the entire industry up.

And to those who have auto approve turned on… it is NOT helping anyone accomplish anything. It is only showing everyone how lazy you are.

I suppose I’m in for an earful now…

I couldn't agree with you more. These sort of sites are only fit for directories that were made for that purpose/niche. Not in General Directories or other such niche.

You are right those sites have a place somewhere but for sure, the ideal place is the adult sector market

General directories usually don't accept those sites as they hurt the directory reputation and search engine reputation too.

For my directory, no adult and gambling.

I have received these submissions on my directory as well, they are easy to spot and delete. I wonder if the editors of the directories you mentioned are actually looking at the submissions at all :)

xc06, I don't agree. It's hard to find any general directories that do not accept these sites.

pctec - 100%, absolutely, positively with you on this one. I don't understand why any website owner not dealing in the lotions and potions trade would willingly link to those sites.

I checked our copy of our Yellow Pages phonebook. There was 4 color pages for escorts along with ads for adult toys and more. Newspapers routinely have ads for escorts, sex clubs, adult toys...

Laws and morality vary from country to country. Should we really hold online directories to a higher standard?

We have a couple sex shops in the city close to me but you have to be 19 to get in the door. I would think a web directory that is not specific to the sex industry would want to be kid friendly. Weird thought eh?

True, but I would have thought the same of the newspapers and yellow pages.

Check out these old and respected directories with Adult categories:

http://www.dmoz.org/Adult/
http://botw.org/top/Adult/
http://www.wowdirectory.com/dir/17449/1.php
http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Shopping_and_Services/Sex/Adult_Galleries/
http://www.uncoverthenet.com/directory/Entertainment_and_Leisure/Adult

Have you emailed the proper people at those directories to tell them that they are ruining the directory business?

Web directories can choose to list whatever types of sites they want. A web directory should try to categorize the entire web...not just what some consider "family friendly." None of those directories (and likely none of the smaller ones you visited) ever claimed to be "family friendly." If you want to build your directory to be family friendly, GREAT! Your directory, your rules.

You obviously did not read my post... I clearly said I have no problem with adult content. But anyone who would list adult content in the category of shopping/gifts is not doing a very good job with their directory. When was the last time you bought a dildo as a gift? They are neither doing their directory any good nor are they providing any kind of quality to their submitters. You want adult content? Great... make an adult category.

And no I did not email anyone anything... why would I? Did you miss the "RANT" in the title?

many directory owners do "select all" and then "approve all". so many websites with many unethical, illegal or wrong categorised sites are listed in general directories. this happens mainly with pr0 new directories and which got announced in various forums.
there are tons of such spam directories and they eventually get banned or penalize by SE doing this.
but there are many forums also those list hell lot of this kind of material (automated registrations and posts)so its not just directories.

If he's a rude English teenager, probably not so long ago :p

Good point though. Adult stuff should be categorised elsewhere.

If they can’t read and understand English proficiently and run an English language directory/link farm how could they possibly categorize anything correctly? At best they just accept anything as it comes in.

Hello...

I have an escort site id like to submit to a few good paid directories...

Any takers?.... :p

lol that why i decided to create my adult directories so that adult webmasters
would have a place to submit sites to rather then our general directories.

BUT.... If your going to knock the adult sites then you might as well do the same for all the gambling sites
that have no fear of paying for a submission and the owners willing to accept for the money.

I think it is a case of running out of time and end up accepting anything. I hate running directories for the shear fact that you can't offer free links without being spammed to death. I spent forever seeping through crap to eliminate spam but still missed one or two.

I also think a lot of directory owners just start them to resell so they accept anything to increase links.

I hate them too but I was just seeing so many sex toy sites surrounding my wholesome sites that it got under my skin :D

I'm almost over it...
Well... until I see them again ;)

I agree except I do accept a few lingerie sites if they are tastefully done.

I have nothing against adult content except it bores me. While it is likely one slips through from time to time I also don't accept escort, gambling, pharmacy, payday loan and am starting to get rid of the acai and other garbage like it on my current project.

Right now about 70-80% of submissions get ditched and still am adding 20 to 50 listings on most days except a few days ago I got on a cleaning kick and deleted something over 100.
