Read the basics first. SEO is easy if you understand its fundamentals. It will also help if you read about the mission vision of Google.
Learning SEO might be easy but not every one who wants to be SEO and read some articles can do it that good...
Well, your point is simple and yet complex. For example, you may learn of the ways for getting your website to the good rankings in the search engines by reading the online articles and posts but if you are going to be an SEO professional and work in a company, that is another story.
Reading is one thing. Implementing is another. Build a small basic website, a hub or a squidoo page and optimize it. Learn from your mistakes and then automate most of your actions.
It isn't that difficult, but it certainly isn't easy. A background in coding will certainly help, but you also need a strong marketing mind to go with it. The best way to become a good SEO is start your own site, and play around with it. When you are good enough to get your sites ranked for most keywords, you could start offering professional services.

Focus on creating great content and optimizing it around keywords for the search engines first, once that is mastered work on off page criteria, my advice is walks before you run.
Oh i see.. If you are just a beginner in SEO, Start with very low competitive keywords. It would be easy for you to rank on them. Long-tailed are very good sample of this, make sure it will still drive traffic to your site.
