Hi everyone, im interested to hear from anyone who has had dental implants done. What were the results like for you? im aware that its expensive, il be going for some myself in the future because i dont like the thought of a bridge meaning decent teeth either side would be drilled down. Did you have any problems with your implants?
pardon my ignorance..but i dislike dentists..so much so that in Jan last year i developed a nasty infection in a impacted wisdom tooth, had a cheek the size of a orange, ended up in an induced coma after the surgery to remove.. i think i have some minor damage to trigeminal nerve and my bottom lip seems to sag more..which from the research i've done less saliva in mouth can cause cavities..my front teeth are getting black.. so yea long story short..i probably should go to dentist..but i'm going to try and get the right vitamins into me first.. LOL sorry. back onto topic.. I am wondering myself what my options could be .. anyway.. so what are dental implants? sorry i can't be of much help..
Blimey that does sound extreme, im sorry that happend to you, i know of the trigeminal nerve through suffering facial neuralgia in the past (evil pain). And if they have damaged the nerve it makes sense what you are saying. As much as i get nervous about dental visits, id always recommend going at least once a year, but i totally understand the avoidance for a lot of people. Dental implants are teeth replacements, instead of dentures, you pay for a titanium implant, threaded i believe, its placed into the jaw bone, left to bond with the bone, then something else is placed sometime after, then the tooth replacement. Quite expensive, im expecting it to cost me anywhere from about £900 to £1200 per tooth, treatment can last between 6 months - 2 years, something like that. But the success rate is said to be good, minimal pain, and improves bite, chewing etc
To answer your question, I have two implants now, looking at possibly a third. I have had no problems at all with my implants whatsoever. The only reason I wouldn't get the third one is if it turns out there is not enough bone left after the extraction to support the implant. They can do a bone graft to enhance support to the implant, but that requires chisling off a peice of bone from my lower jaw. I think I will just suffer from a gap in my teeth before I do that. If you are a candidate for "normal" implants, I highly suggest them, your oral surgon will explain the procedure. Best of luck.
And why is that? Hi Tauren, im pleased that you have had no problems, from the various cases im reading about the success rate seems to be very high. If i ever need bone grafting done for this id prefer not to have a piece of my own bone taken for it but instead, human, animal or the synthetic option. instead.
A friend of mine had dentals implants (4 implants) a few years back and she is extremely happy with them. The process is a little long and perhaps a little pain involved, but the outcome well worth it. Amazing how a set of nice teeth can change your whole appearance. Best of luck
thanks. the pain i went through in previous 4 years i wouldn't wish on my worst enemy! ..i had 3 doctors tell me it was a dislocated jaw,the mandibular muscle was weak and last doctor said i had something in my saliva gland!! I was on 7 antiobiotics! So yea i recommend to anyone reading this thread..if you get excruciating pain in around your jaw area see a specialist if your getting several conflicting diagnosis(es?) luckily i made through my holiday got back home with bf and my mother insisted we go to hospital..lucky we did,the surgeon said if i hadnt made it to surgery when i did i would have died 2 hours later -yikes.. Implants sound painful. I guess if i eventually lose my top 2 front teeth its a good option. and yes, facial neuralgia pain is horrible. I'm still getting slight pains..i call it "phantom tooth pain". I've switched my toothepaste to a whitening one,and adding bicarb soda. Evidently bicarbonate soda can get in and clean teeth better than toothepaste.. btw, sorry i've repeated myself from my first post..lol. Good luck with whatever you decide.
I have 20 dental implants at home... I don't have any in my mouth but I've placed a lot of them on my patients.
Get the implants. Being able to chew a good steak is very important. Just make sure you go to the right doctor.
Thanks workathomeshop, im very pleased at the amount of people who have been happy with the result, i agree a nice set of teeth, real or replaced can make all the difference. Bloody hell, it shows just how serious it can get when problems with teeth become much worse, ive read how of dental problems go untreated for too long that they can and do have serious effects on overall health, how abcesses and other problems shouldn't be ignored either. Sorry that you have went through so much with that, but im pleased that its improved for you. From what ive read, the pain experienced from preparation for implants can be not too bad, a bit of swelling and no extreme pain. Cool, a dentist in the house, i wont ask you about your patients because thats confidential, but i imagine you would recommend them for a relatively healthy individual? Thanks Old Goat, i will, ive since felt that i cant enjoy my food properly with current problems with my teeth and look forward to possibly 3 of my teeth being replaced by implants. I will do, its important to feel that the person performing the procedure is experienced enough.
Of course, it's the best you can have after your real teeth. And if they are well placed and well rehabilitated you won't even notice they are not your real teeth... But one thing is sure, you NEED to take care of them. It's not just pay the implants, place them and forget that they exist and don't brush them, floss etc etc... You need to keep in mind they are the most precious thing in your mouth and you need to take really good care of them otherwise they will fail. Yes, there is a % of implants that fail. Mostly due to low hygiene if the rehabilitation is already in place. Any doubts, feel free to PM me dude.
Thanks Jarodboy, yeah i was reading about that very recently, about the importance of looking after them, keeping high oral hygiene standards to keep the implants especially in good condition.
indeed it does. It has given me a whole new look to life. I've even considered starting a 'bucket list'! Coming close to death, makes you realise that life is fragile. I also realised i need to stop wasting time on crap and start working towards my dreams and goals. It's easy to put up with mild to acute pain long enough..especially on a low income. Even though australia has medicare..waiting lists for public dentists are huge and we still have to pay to get in door. Luckily though becuase i was on medicare i didn't have to pay for the surgery. (I even had my own private room post surgery/after Intensive care.) So yea money was a huge factor. There are not enough public dentists more here either. and the ones that are are indian/ethnic and are barely understandable (no offence to any indians. I just wish if the gov was going to bring out doctors/dentists from other countries that dont speak english to train them to speak..even better how about they open up more places in universities here for australians to train??..anyhoo i'll shut up on that rant..) Also another note,i found out from one of my attending registrars that there were 3 other surgeries the same night as mine exactly the same cases..I never asked if any died I guess implants can't be as painful as an orange sized swelling on face full of pus, causing so much pain i couldnt sleep for 7days then enduring a breathing tube shoved in nose while awake(becuase my throat was swollen) and having a stint in neck to drain remaining pus after 300mls was removed and wisdoms, then 3 or 5 days(i dunno bit a blur now) days post surgery having hives all over for almost a week!! [sorry for being slightly off topic with my posts-i should have made 1 big post lol] So yea the big lesson is try to get assistance as soon as its needed. cheers, arcanus
Arcanus, a nice outlook that you have, its good not to waste time and to work towards what you want. Sounds like you really went through as much as any person could take with all that was needed, sounds very painful indeed.
