Needs to be done for forum to attract new members

can anyone suggest what needs to be done for my forum to attract new members to sign-up and participate in the forum?

Referral contests, and also maybe a $100 prize to the best poster? And ... NEW SKIN!!! I've seen this one on dozens of sites

 

I am trying to replace the skin but it seems that i can't find something that can really suit my skin taste that is why I am still sticking into this default. thanks for the comment, I have appreciated it.

 

I agree, the first think I'd do would be to replce the skin. I looks far too bland, I'd probably click away before even reaing what the forum was about.
Once you've changed the design I'd do as many of possible or all of the following,

Post yourself, as much a possible, people don't post in dead forums. This also includes getting your friends to post also.

Run a competition. I run things along the lines of, register and make 5 posts and have a chance to win XXXX. I think this is better than make 100 posts and win XXX as more people register. Not many people will be enticed into making 100 posts.

Paid posting helps when you don't have much time.

Link exchanges with other sites in the niche.

Post articles on the site and submit them to Digg or Shoutwire if relevant.

 

thanks matt, that is what i am planning now to have a referral competition with at least 5 post of the one refferred. I will try to look for new skin further.

 

Usually by having a custom skin made especially for your site and by having money involve will boost your forums.
