It's good practice to have tidy code, but the only reasonable argument I have read for SEO benefit is that some spiders/robots will sometimes 'trip over' poorly coded sites/pages and not index them properly (or at all!).

I'd be interested to hear any other reasons too, as I'm designing a site just now and making 100% sure it is w3c compliant.

I read a SEO book that said that any site that's W3C compliant is a friend of Google - and it even recommended putting the W3C approved link at the bottom of the page to improve pr. However, when I started using a submenu package in a non-W3C compliant way it had no impact on serps.

in my own experience and research, i haven't found any proof that site validation had anything to do with SEO. i have seen plenty of sites that dont pass xhtml or w3c validation but ranks high on search engines

Site validation does NOT have anything to do with the PR of a site. Want proof? I just went to about 3 SEO firms site and you can bet they do everything they know to increase their pr. I validate their site and they have xhtml 1.0 transitional doctype with about 10 errors. If it affected PR, the firms would at least validate their code wouldn't you think?

    Cheers
