PageRank is based on the number and quality of your backlinks. The more incoming backlinks the better. The less outbound links - the better.
In my opinion upto PR5 is very easy. Then it is some what difficult to improve unless you are maintaining the good quality on backlinks. That means google will be checking more quality back links to increase the PR above 5 and most of the time it reduces the site with PR 5 because it finds paid links. So once you reached PR 5 please take more concern on retaining the PR and build quality contents to increase the PR. All the best!!

Now you have to concentrate on quality links with high PR which help to maintain current PR and as well as to Increase PR. quality links means .gov link, .edu link, Niche back link.
Why bother, PR means nothing these days, it is like that moulding cheese in the back of the fridge...past its sell by date.

Though improving PR 5 is considered easy, it would be gained with specific strategy and a consistent link building. As you've already gained PR 5, maintain the same strategy with consistency and look forward for more increase in PR.
PR5 is considered as high... If you have reached that kind of PR.. I guess you really know the answer... (keep on getting backlinks from sites that have high PR)
google's usual rule is to have not more than 25 outbound links per page....its better to put the link on some other pages if you are linking to more sites.
