Have you ever regretted letting a domain expire or selling to someone else? Do you want it back? What's your story?

Here's mine: When facebook was 'thefacebook' and only for a limited number of schools, would you believe I owned the domain 'facebookie (dot) com'. At the time I tried to sell it on eBay and no one wanted it! Boy I didn't know much than! I let it expire  What do you think that would be worth now?

I had the Bratz.Net domain name for several years before the Bratz dolls came out. I used it for a military brats site for a while then just played with it. When the Bratz dolls came out I set up an affiliate with them and after a month I got a cease and desist letter from the maker of the Bratz doll line along with a demand to turn the domain over to them.. My domain and several other Bratz domains were sent the same letter.

I contacted an attorney about it and he said I could fight it and probably win but the cost would probably be more than I could afford. Of course I was new at this whole thing back then and I should have realized that if I had the domain name years before the dolls came out I could have kept it all. The lawyer I contacted was not very familiar with internet law nor domain name resolutions.

But alas what goes around comes around. I gave up my Bratz.net domain name but I read recently where the Bratz doll line is soon to meet its end over a huge lawsuit. It seems the creator of Bratz dolls created it on someone elses time and company ......... can you say proprietary information. I dont know if that is the exact story with why they are shutting down but that was my interpretation of it.

you wouldn't be able to get away with bebay. you'll almost instantly receive an email from ebay legal if it has their name to cease and desist...

& that's amazing about the bratz domain

I once owned a LLL.net which I could have gotten a lot for. I did make a hefty profit on selling it but think I could have done better. Here is why:

[IMG] The .com is a multi-billion dollar company
[IMG] There were endless end user possibilities
[IMG] The .com showed some interest but were slow at replying to emails
[IMG] The name was appraised at $4-6k by professional domain investors - I sold for under half that

in my early years i let a few established domains just expire or gave away when I was taking a break from webmastering. I should of put smaller sites up and earned some $$ on them. I didn't realize the amount of traffic that they were really getting until it was too late.

I sold a VCVC.com pronouncable on eBay a couple of months ago for $800 and feel that I gave it away. I should of researched the market and held onto it a bit longer first, as I feel I could of gotten more.

    Hind site is 20/20

    Excellent question!

I am already regretting those I will lose from my many domains I created this year when they come up for renewal soon at a dear registration price.

Indeed. most of my (great) domain names that I created will not survive!

It's only because I never been able to maximize their value as "income websites".

Truly, as a new "domainer" from 6 months ago only, and after having registered 100+ domain names and great websites since then... all I can say is that out of a 100 domains, I will only retain 10/15 top performing ones.

It's called "cost of business"..... BUT GREAT NAMES SHOULD NEVER BEEN FORGOTTEN!!

    :)

What do you mean by dear registration price? Ten dollars? Why not keep your domains and park them with the new Google ads thing? Surely they will atleast pay for themselves? five dollars a month? Just an idea :)

Maybe even sell them for a little profit here on Digital Point Domain Sales?

It's probably good you didnt bother fighting it, your defense was blown as soon you started selling bratz dolls on the domain. Might have had a case if you had continued with the original site that was not related to the dolls but selling their product immediately shows bad faith. Hard to claim your domain had nothing to do with Bratz after that.

I had an offer once on a domain that I had let expire a few months prior....but it was still available! I quickly registered and flipped it...guess people don't always check whois.

Yea, I had a couple that I regretted selling. One was a dating site I started. It was doing great and the new owner messed it up. He later lost it but I did not have the time to redo it.

I sold one domain (web hosting based) for $250. I was a new to web hosting business at that time and now I regretted. The new domain owner sold it for $850!

I gave up 10 domains last year. I should not have done that. As domains age, their value goes up.
