Or, how much do you think the average webmaster spends on advertising?

What do you understand by "average webmaster"? Anyway, your question is quite weird.

Maybe you want to refine it ... Onlline advertising is a huge field.

Alright, I'll try to rephrase it a bit, I guess "average webmaster" is a little vague. I'm still rather new to DP and site creation in general, and I'm just learning about online marketing and advertisements. So, I was just wondering how much money a "typical" owner would put towards promoting a site on a monthly basis.

It can be tough starting out because I don't want to just throw money at something I know nothing about, however I would love to learn about the field - how it works, etc... And starting off slow seems like a better way to go.

I understand that this is still a rather open-ended question, and there are a lot of different possible answers. It's kind of like "how much money would you put into a house", and a lot of webmasters probably don't want to give out their finances, but I'm still interested in what kind of answers I get from the community.

I prefer free marketing methods, so barely none. But it depends on what you are promoting, or what type of online business you are running. If you are doing affiliate marketing through PPC you are spending a lot of money, but if you're a bum marketer the only thing you spend is your free time.

it depends what you are marketing. I do mainly software and have 7 softwares in total. I spend an average of $10,000 a month on advertising(adwords). I get about a 150% ROI on each $1 spent. thats the benefit of selling an actual product is that you can measure ROI and other details very accurately

If you're a newbie, then I suggest you to close your wallet and use only free advertising. It's not very effective, but the alternative may be awful for you. Lots of money spent and no big result (because you're newbie).

You need first to learn how the things work and then start spending money on advertising.

On the other hand, always remember that a good advertising campaign may DESTROY you when the site/product you promote is not really good (may not be good again because you're newbie).

It is extremely tough to get a figure in here.

We've got the top ones spending $XXXXX and more every month, and the guys at the bottom of the niche, trying every free trick in the book.

High $XX might be a decent average figure.

I kind of knew that it was a tough question to really nail down, but figured I would ask it anyway. I thought that $XX would be enough to promote a small site but from the response I got from another thread, I started to have doubts and second thoughts. I'm not really trying to be a "top one" in my niche, just trying to find a small following.

I'm glad to see there are quite a few people out there sticking with the bum marketing techniques. I have learned a lot while working with these methods. They can be time-consuming but do have some payoffs.

Thank you everyone for your answers, you have all been helpful.
