Risky Iphone App Development Idea... Advice Please!

    Hi guys,

    I need your opinions...

    I own a website that gets 60,000 hits a day (35,000 uniques)

I've got this idea for an iphone app that would go really well with the site (totally stand alone from the site)

    The problems are...

    1. To make the iphone app -- i'd need a mac to run Xcode. I dont have experiance using xcode, but im sure i could do it.
    2. If i dont want to buy the mac, i could hire someone to write it, but that might actually cost as much as the mac. (and if i did buy the mac, i could always write more apps) But a hired programmer will do it quicker, and might write better code.

The MAIN problem is... There are free versions of this app available in the app store already. But can i count on the 60k views to get some sales of a say, $2, or $1 app instead of the free one.

Any advice on what you would do would be great!

    Cheers.

No coz consumer will be well informed that the apps can get free.
Since all those visitor come to your site is having interest in iphone,so its common for them to look for latest and free apps for their iphone.
You better hire a coder to code a unique apps that have marketability value.

    Cheers guys. :p

    Anyone else have any thoughts?

I was just hoping that on my site, i could have "Get This app for your iphone - only $2" -- with a link stright to app store. So that might make them not even look for the free version?

    Thanks!!! :)

If you never used Object C then you might not want to try to write it yourself. Futher I would say; try it. Programmers are free these days anyway.

What is the application about? If you think up some additional features and market it well enough, it will sell.

Hire a programmer , make sure you have some extra features and sell it for $5 (give 50% discount to first ten buyers ,etc)

You can rent a Mac server for xcode development. Google "Mac Hosting". There was a provider renting out Mac Minis for this purpose

By the way there's a really good course on the subject that's been lauched recently which is done by Trey Smith and if you can afford it (it's about 3k) then definitely go for it.
Finally for once at least the course wasn't all rehashed crap and had some great value for what you paid for it. Look it up. Might help you.
