I'm using phpBB, I figure out what to do, I ban all words related to porn. Plus I might give up on the forum, its too much work, and its not making any money.

I wish there was a script out there that made it seem to the user like their posts were accepted.. But spammers' are invisible to everyone else.. That way human spammers won't realise they're not getting others' eyeballs so won't go to the effort of using different IP's.

I'm surprised no one has created an anti-spam addon for the major BBs... Maybe they have, I dont know. But something with some extensive tools would be a welcome addition for any forum webmaster I assume. Could probably make some decent money with it also :)

    People !

With VBulletin you can choose to moderate ALL posts from a certain usergroup. All new users will be by default in that user group and they will be promoted only after a while (enough time + posts to prove that they are not a spammer).

When posts are moderated they are invisible to all users until the moderator accepts the post.

Looks like VB has what you want right now - and this is not a hack to VB. It is build in by default.

phpbb is not the best board when it comes to preventing spam. Its a pain to delete posts aswell coz the moderating options are weird.
I use vb and am happy with it and its got all the things which you need to be a pain in the spammers ass :)

I agree with you. Recently I had to shut down a PHPBB forum on a website because of spammers. I had absolutely no ads on the forum (I did not intend to make any money with it) but the forun was constantly eating 10-15 minutes a day because of spammers. The matter became much worse lately, so I had to disable the forum.

You can read more here: (on vbulletin.com forums I have the same ID, so you can read what I wrote there)

He is in Russia. They don't care very much about stopping spammers over there. Most of the Spam (at least that I receive in my Tech forums) originate from Russia or Eastern Europe.

This is how I stopped it on my phpBB2 forum.

Setup CAPTCHA & email confirmation to stop bots.

Then it was a case of dealing with the manual spammers, they were finding my forum using Google and searching "memberlist.php".

So I deleted memberlist.php and disallowed it in robots.txt, this stopped them finding me in Google and also stops their back links working in their profiles.

I then installed a mod that shows the member-list in the control panel so I can still use it.

    Dave.

    **Edit**

A MOD-Rewrite mod should sort it too as it will stop the common searched for pages from showing up in Google (viewtopic.php, memberlist.php etc), if they cant find you they cant spam you.

I had exactly the same issue with PHPBB. The thread that I recommended above is about this.

Hi mate, solving your problem is easy. ;)

Just add his url to the "forbidden words" list and you are done, he wont spam you since he can't write is URL. It'll appear like this: http://www.*********.com :D

If even that doesn't work do as novashun suggested, try to see the pattern and ban the whole range temporarily just so he doesn't come back.

If even that doesn't work, close signups for a week or so, he will eventually give up.

Best of luck, rep. is appreciated but not necessary.

    Freddy :)
