You may want to get the basics of HTML etc here http://www.w3.org/ . From here if there is any topics you want to research or learn more of, just do a Google for that topic. w3.org provides quite a good base for your learning.

    Don't bother taking a course.

Pick a site that you like, download it, and pull it apart. Look at the code and work out what it does.
Create mockups in Photoshop (or whatever), and then work out how to make it happen in a browser.

All the information you need is out there on the interknit. Go and find it. Teach yourself to teach yourself :)

Self study is better. It is totally waste to study a web design course from an institute. (Here is a plenty of such institutes in my city).

    Well that will depend.
Newbies web designers will design and possibly convert the layout to valid html and css and coding will be done by someone else.

More experience designers will have programing abilities like javascript and php.

Be sure to learn tools of trade like photoshop, fireworks, dreamweaver, flash and some actionscript.

    Crazy

There's nothing like going to college and learning the basics but web design is something you can learn from home. I am currently enrolled in college taking web design and I am spending around 40 grand.

In college you learn from doing different assignments all the time which you have to research and basically do yourself. The good thing is you have a teacher to ask for help when you run into trouble. There are so many sites online to learn from. Do your research and go from there.

Best way to learn is go out and do it. Get dreamweaver, get photoshop, and go to work. It won't come fast but once you figure it out you will be glad you did. Not a lot of people are computer savy and it's to your advantage to spend the time and learn it, it will save you money without a doubt and maybe even earn you money in the long run.

It depends on if you want to do web layout, or code. I can say there's a definite advantage to going and learning Graphic Design and focusing on web, but I wouldn't take a web-only course unless it was also focusing on the code-aspect and programming of the web and not just markup (HTML and CSS)

While the skills can be learned for free, there's a certain sensitivity and principle that need to also be learned either through a LOT of experience or training.

I can say I went into college with software skills which have only gradually increased since then, but my sensitivity to typography, layout and colour has increased exponentially since then.

i think its been recommended hundreds of times, and yet:
    http://w3schools.com/

knowing all that would make you a professional web master -
but it all depends on how good are you as an autodidact.

a friend of mine is now making her first steps in photoshop and html, as a beginning. i give her books and homework every week, and tell her to practice - but every now and than shes complaining she cant do it by herself - she needs people around her, just for the mind evoking.
shes very smart, intelligent and learning fast but i guess she have had enough of learning by herself.
    so, it depends...

HTML and CSS is a must like everyone mentioned. Also there are a lot of free ebooks and video tutorials (youtube) if you look hard enough. Start by making a basic site and then fancy it up by flash and photoshop. Worked for me. Best of luck.

Ok well heres my input. If you are not passionate about designing (with digital tools such as photoshop/ illustrator etc) then dont bother. You need a creative mind in order to succeed . This is ony half of the requirements to be truly titled as a web designer. You must be able to code as well to web specifications (validate). Then gradually use other web technologies such as php, javascript even flash when you are becoming more competent with your skills.

I myself taught myself everything i know today but as you may well know the best artists etc are the ones self taught for one reason only. They wish to pursue that line of work as its what they enjoy and are above all good at( dont have to be great awesome out of this world but good then improve). I wouldnt be doing web design and many other digital art which includes photo manipulations, wallpaper, banners etc if i didnt enjoy it. So yeah if you enjoy that kind of work and wish to learn then by all means look for online tutorials ebooks video sites and pick up on the correct syntax used . Many use wrong syntax and as such theres such alot of bad coders around.

For design you can not be taught how to design as such. Yes theres tutorials but at the end of the day its your creativity that is needed to produce a quality or even medicore design.

If you wish to take a course then mutimedia is the route you will be pursing. Yes theres many more courses for various other aspects of digital art which is completely different from web based material.

I hope for all the best and good luck !
