Is it possible to rank #1 for many keywords???

    Hi all,

Say I have a website about Computers, and it is www.computers.com, and my title tag is "Computers - Software - Technology"

Lets say I rank high for 3 keywords: Computers, Software, Technology.... and I rank high because of the Title Tag, keywords in content, and tons of high PR backlinks with the anchor text "Computers" "Software", "Technology".

Ok, now... lets say I like those 3 keywords..... but I want to rank in the top 3 for dozens of keywords, ones that aren't on the Title Tags or Meta Description.... but I have TONS of backlinks for them such as:

    Microsoft
    Playstation Games
    Keyboards
    Mouses
    etc.

    I have 2 questions:

    1) Is it possible to rank #1 for MANY keywords??? -- and have you seen sites that rank high for dozens of keywords?

    2) If im ranking high for 3 keywords..... will getting 1000's of more backlinks for other keywords hurt my rankings for the keywords im ranking for?

i.e. ... Im ranking #1 for "Computers".... but since Google see's 100's of anchor text going to "Microsoft"...... it will devalue my backlinks for computers

You might have to read this post twice!! Thank you!!!

It is possible to rank for many "longtail" keywords e.g if you were number 1 for say computers, there is a good chance you will rank number 1 for a number of related phrases - perhaps "buy computers cheap", "buy computers online" etc etc.

Of course the keywords you have chosen are VERY VERY competivie so unless you are amazon or ebay or something I would forget about rankings for Computers - Software - Technology lol

It's possible but not very likely. But your second and third keywords will rank fairly well.

Did i miss something or did you guys completely NOT answer the question?
i don't think you need to spend time evaluating the keywords listed.

    The real question would be

"1) Is it possible to rank #1 for MANY keywords??? -- and have you seen sites that rank high for dozens of keywords?

    2) If im ranking high for 3 keywords..... will getting 1000's of more backlinks for other keywords hurt my rankings for the keywords im ranking for?

    1) Yes. Authority sites rank well for many keywords.

    2) If you get backlinks to target other keywords, it will have a positive effect on other keyword rankings, because your site will have more links and authority.

Yes I figured... but I was wondering if it "watered down" the backlinks...

i.e., instead of 100% of the backlinks going to "Computers".... now only 10% do.... 10% to Sofware.... etc. .... and will water the rest down

It will have a natural link profile. Having all your backlinks with the same anchor text is bad SEO.

There are so many keywords, both long and shot tail ones...

If you were to have a website for a long time, and work very hard on your Search Engine Optimization, then i do believe that YES!... It is possible to do so.

All the best, and happy holiday seasons,

Its not only about backlinks too, if you have thousands of pages of text content (like wiki and others) you are much more likely to rank for hundreds of longtail keywords

Youtube, Digg, Blogger.com, wordpress.com .... just a few sites that manage to rank well for many 100000s of keywords .... so yes it's possible .... if you could be punished for having external anchor links with different anchors - then that would be an easy black hat way to wipe out your competition.

You can rank top for hundreds of long tailed keywords if have optimized them correctly and have them within your website content at most important places ;)

I could also depend a little on how well or good the on page SEO and keyword usage is on those items or articles!

Like is there related images with related alt=""> text on your page/s in your writeup's or content about these articles:

    Microsoft
    Playstation Games
    Keyboards
    Mouses
    etc.

Is there proper or good usage of <h1> and <h2> tags? [in the content articles]

Those things done precisely well can certainly help things.. not sure if will bring ya all the way to the front page, but it sure will help.

It is possible, but unless you plan on creating the next 'about.com', you'd be better advised to create a 'nexus' - a site targeted towards a particular niche, with a focus on the keywords and phrases relevant to that niche. It's a much simpler task, and far easier to maintain too.

One thing - beware of 'keyword stuffing'. If you trip the spam filters of any major search engine, you'll not rank for anything at all. Just try and *keep it natural*. The days when you could 'game' a search engine are long gone. The most effective strategy, actually, is to create a 'real' site (little or no SEO onsite) and then throw thousands of backlinks at it from other domains, IPs. There are a number of ways of doing this - my fave is 'autoblogging'.

Auto Blogging is a good idea.

But, do you post the same content on many sites or have lots of blogs which you have made to be posted all over the place?

Nice tip, - Could you share?

Adobe.com have 107,000 Back Links that have been indexed by Google coming back to their website.

They also have a PR9 out of 10...

    Nicely done, I think!....
