Hey all ya DP'ers out there...

I love an inspirational story. So, I thought I'd share one of mine. Please chime in with your own as well because it helps keep me going when the chips don't seem to be falling (as well as they are now!)

One of my sites just launched about 4 weeks ago.

Today it was ranking for some *super* hot terms related to a particular news story that's apparently been getting a lot of press in some circles.

Anyway, about 4-5k uniques and 11-12k pageviews later today, here I am.

From anyone's experiences out there, what kind of fallout can be expected from this kind of traffic?

I know it'll drop off majorly in a week or two, but hopefully some repeat visitors will stick around. :)

    - Fez

[Not sure if I'm allowed to post links yet here...] But if you want to see the Sitemeter graph (for some reason), here's a copy:

Nice. I wish i was getting that amount of traffic. Been around for 8 weeks now, and I only get a fraction of what you are getting.

    Congrats.

    Thanks guys.

    TRUE DAT, yo!

I like this quote (not sure who said it first):

"It doesn't matter which half of the day you work... the first 12 hours, or the second."

    A quick note:

That SiteMeter from the linked blog posting above is not from fezbucks.com. (thought that would be obvious, but apparently not)

I own & operate about 30 web properties and this traffic is just on my latest one.

    Mike, et al -

The only advice I have is if you can somehow take advantage of this whole "user-generated content" thing.

It doesn't have to be whole articles -- it can just be news / link / etc submissions.

For the particular set of keywords that were ranking really well, it was just a hot button news topic.

On my site, there was just a one-paragraph blurb about the story, which ended up ranking really well...

The trick is (for this kind of thing) to get indexed really quickly by Google so that even a few days later you can start ranking.

FYI - traffic for this term is down over 50% but we hit 14k pageviews the day of the peak =)

Can you tell us more about this. What was the site that got the traffic? What was the topic or keywords that were providing you with so much traffic?

    Congrats, please tell us more.

    BILZ -

    I think I've given enough advice =)

If you want to rank for the exact same keywords, it's already too late.

I will tell you this... I have repeatedly had luck over the years with terms related to normal people who decide to take their clothes off for some reason or another.

Remember when some random Survivor girl posed in Playboy?

Or when other B-Celebs have a sex tape leaked.

Basically, if you are already ranking for their names... you will probably show up in related searches like "<b-celeb name> nude".

Anyway, that's just one aspect of this thing.

OK - here's a good one. Do you guys incorporate Yahoo! Buzz, or related data into your site somehow?

It's a great way to get fresh content & hotly-searched keywords. You just have to find a way to integrate it so that you have a page for each keyword, like "World Cup 2006" or whatever is hot at the moment.
