Its easier just to use Google with "your niche" forum failing that, I'm not sure of your niche, so could not point you to a good directory.

Did you read my post you quoted, or the rest of the thread?

If you are just putting your site in your sig and posting crap, then your results will be crap. Re-read my first post and count the steps that have NOTHING to do with the signature of your site and you should see just what I'm talking about.

Several members (including myself) have expanded on the first post.

Get a few posts out with your links in the posts themselves... a link IN a post will hold a lot more power to those reading the thread then a post in your signature.

Either way, just posting with a sig may help get you indexed, but in many cases in this day and age of spammers can just as likely get you banned.

    *shrug*

Sorry to repeat the message but, hey! nice article man.:D

No seriously, it is a good article. Its informative, well thought out and makes a lot of sense. There are a lot of good tips here, but I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to.
I've noticed in your profile and some others here that you put a web address in the place where your location would be shown.
What is the purpose of it if it isn't a link.

very nice post on a simple yet effective way of getting back links. 1 thing, maybe I missed it but you didn't mention to make sure they are "DoFollow" forums. Alot of forums are NoFollow so that is very important.

Copy/Paste it into your browser for more information ;)

It's product recognition, the same as putting a website or logo in your avatar.

I personally post post A LOT in the ODP/DMOZ forum here on DP, a related name in my location, posts, sig, whatever is good for business (but for the record, I have my location link there because I like where it's pointing too, not because I was paid).

Thanks for the reply Q but I used a bit of common sense and I did copy/paste the addy. It suddenly became very clear what it was and why it was there.
Its a simple idea and not something I would ever have thought of if I hadn't seen it in your posts.
I will have to revisit all my forums now and change my location details.:)

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/memberlist.php?&order=DESC&sort=posts&pp=30

Generally the top posters seen on the member list (mods & admin aside, many of their posts are hidden)

EDIT: Correction... on some forums, a new member that gets 20+ posts per day would count, though they are not the kind you are looking for. You want the happy go lucky kind that the memberbase looks up to.

Sometimes what I also like to do is to go back to the forums where I know I have links, re-register and then post again with similar links back to my sites. Just changing the url to a deeper part of the site, or a different page or microsite. That sometimes works well, that way your getting a good spread of links to different parts of the site.

thanks for the extra info, like the post whore method, thats a good idea, i usually just check the relevent thread topics or post on something that I know about genrally.
