Like nick said a redirect would help, also depends on what the site was running before and now.

Permanent redirect would be the best option from a SEO point of view. However if you are considering redirecting the entire website which was resident on the old URL to the new URL, it can get a bit tricky if the directory structure is not the same.

There would be multiple pages and depending on the size of the website it could entail some hard work. If the directory structure is the same then it should be a cake walk. Hope this helps.

Are you worried about the traffic loss during the overhaul of your website or after 301 redirect?

Do a 301 redirect, you may lose some rankings initially but you will recover from it
