hi, i have a music blog, i talk about new discs, new bands, all with a funny mood. I was thinking on opening a new category, called "funny" where i will post some funny pics and talk about them. what do you suggest? if i add it to my blog, do you think it will hurt my positions on google and yahoo? im getting 3500-4000 uniques a day from search engines. or will i need to open a subdomain?
It shouldn't hurt you, but it might be difficult to rank for terms that are unrelated to the rest of the content on your site. I say go for it though.....more unique content is almost always a good thing.
No it wont hurt your current content, it wont do your site any harm at all, look at the big tech blogs, they blog about all sorts of subjects
Adding more original content to your site will never hurt. But if you start adding too many off topic content on your site, it might hurt your readers usability. Moreover a site with lot of different topics need to get a good number of backlinks to rank high compared to tightly focused niche site. -Neo
I would do research into the possible LSI related long term phrases that may be related to this highly specialized topic by using the Google Adwords tool. Think in terms of "funny musicians" and look for the names of "funny" muscians. One of the best direct keyword phrases I found in your niche just now were "funny kids songs" but you can also look at "weird al songs" pulling 6600 searches a month.
The only thing you might want to make sure of is if you want to keeps your Adsense ads relating to music, you'll want to add the exception tags for Google's bot.
It shouldn't hurt you. On the contrary, people who have a sense of humour will certainly like those pics. They might even forward it to their friends, and it will result in an increase in traffic.
@dantplayer, how do i add the exception tags for google`s bot? i have removed the category from the main feed, to not hurt my visitors that just want to read about music.
Diego, Here's the link: https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=23168 It's called "section targeting" Basically you just add those tags to the content you don't want reflected in the ads.
