Problems with having Duplicate homepage

    Hello,

I have several clients who have a duplicate homepage, eg.

    www.site.com

    &

    www.site.com/main.asp

I know it is good to get a redirect pointing to the main site but what is the reason for this? What drawbacks does having a duplicate homepage have? And how significant is it?

    Thanks

I believe it's because search engines used to treat these as two separate URLs (not sure if that is still the case). This meant that you have two pages competing against each other and your ranking is therefore diluted. Imagine your links being split 50/50 between the two pages even though they are in fact the same page.

Limotek has replied to your question. You should try to get rid of any such duplicate content by using either redirects or disallowing indexing with robots.txt

You can use a 301 redirect to point the duplicate hompage to the root domain.
