Here is Google's own search engine optimization (SEO) guide. It is a first step to understanding how to write contents and optimize it for search engines. One thing it does not talk about is the keyword. You need to collect a few related keyword, preferably long tail keywords, and wirte your contents around those keywords.

People believe that keyword density should be kept between 2-7% in your content and the writeup should primarily be written for humans and not bots.

I would say always write for the user. If it reads poorly because of over optimisation for SEO then you're less likely to grab the attention of the reader and convert them into a potential customer.

If the page has good content, is interesting and informative then it has better scope for the insertion of the main and long tail keyphrases without destroying readability.

I would say write the content / copy first for the user then optimise for SEO after.
