If you are interested in knowing the number of backlinks recognised by Google then you can go to Google and type in link:yourdomainname.com. But it takes time for them to index the links so be patient with this.

The number of links recognised by Google directly affect your PR in the update.

I always use link: site.com in whatever search engine I want to check!

This works with most search engines. You will notice differences between them. Google recognizes far fewer links than Yahoo so try both and any others that you would like to check.

google purposely doesn't show all links so that they don't give out to much information in regards to their PR formula

I believe seoquake has it. It's a free toolbar add on. Every site or page you go to, the toolbar displays Google PR, Alexa rank, Yahoo, etc. It also shows the links and keyword density of a page. Right now, this page has 151 links. Seems like an awful lot!

I've tried the link:domainname on Google, but I never get nearly as many backlinks as I get when I type the same domain name into Backlinkwatch or Yahoo site explorer.

Google is good at hiding how they do what they do.

I suggest you use a tool that can analyze anchor text and follow attribute. Gives a much clear picture of your seo efforts.
