How important is it for SEO to have your target keywords in your domain name?

I agree. I'd say they have a good bit of influence on your ranking.
Not essential thou by any means. Sometimes a catchy original name can have even better value as people remember them, such as: facebook, myspace, google, twitter, youtube......

VERY VERY important. thats the first thing i do, register the domain name with keyword. if i dont get .com with my desired keyword, i go for .net, if thats not available, i put - in between KWs but i must get the KW in the domain.

The top performers on the internet manage without it.
amazon, ebay, youtube, myspace, facebook....where's the keyword in any of those domains?
If you've got a one-page sales page with nothing else going for it - it's important.
If you've got the sort of site that you're expecting to be a long-term business, being memorable is as, if not more, important.

It can help simply because it helps you get keyword rich links back to the site. If you are in a very competitive market and you are not trying to brand a decent or unique name, go with a keyword url.

Domain name is one of important thing for a website to be found in search engines and keep a place in human mind easier (except sites people know) however you can get visitors without a name based domain too but a real "keyword" domain always affects you all around search engines.

In the on page optimization, target keywords in your domain name is important. you can use "-" for separate your keywords in domain name. ebay, youtube, myspace, not like this, they use their product (company) name as their domain. if your website relevant to your product, you should be use your product or company name as domain name.

    Absolutely true.

If you are planning to create a brand, and have loads of $$ to fund the venture initially, you need not worry so much about the name.

If you are a small time guy, you'll need the name. It also depends on the competition involved. Some keywords are easy to rank for, and do not even require the words to be present in the domain name.

A good point to note is that many directories and blog comments require you to use your site name as the anchor text. So of you have your target keyphrase in your name then bingo, you canalways put it in the anchor text without problem.

It's important, it helps a lot, but don't put too many keywords in your domain name and make it easy to remember.

Type in "ladders" into Google - almost all of the top 10 have ladders in their URL

But the one that's got the no.1 spot is nothing to do with ladders - it's an employment agency. It's not their 'keyword', it's their brand name.

    It's an interesting question.

I was looking at the thread by a super affiliate called Nabs

and wondering why he works on 100+ websites rather than one site that covers everything - perhaps it is in part due to the advantage of having keywords in the URL - he mentions getting most of his traffic organically through the SERPs rather than PPC -
