I have just installed google analystics and was wondering what bounce rate is 'normal' for most site.

I know it will vary but just looking for rough comparisons.

As you stated, this will vary a lot depending on things like your niche and site structure. For some people 40% is acceptable, while others want less than 20%. For some niches some people may even be happy with 60%. There isn't really one acceptable rate.

as said before it totally depends on your niche and what kind of site you have for example social media sites tend to be more "sticky" so they tend to have a lower bounce rate than others etc

The lower the better, I think part of looking at bounce rate should be review to make changes to your site to bring this down, with better content and possibly navigation and target keywords.

The lower the better of course but anything below 50% is considered a success at least in my book
below 60% I would consider acceptable

20 - 25% is a good bounce rate. But still it depends on the niche of your site. If the visitors found what they are looking for, there will be a big chance that they will just leave your site, It is also a good indication of bounce rate. It really depends!

For me it depends what kind of site you are running. If it is just a simple landing page then obviously you are going to have a lot more clickouts. But on a site with actual useful content I have been getting about 15% bounce rate which I am very happy with and hope it continues. But with a landing page I try to get around 60% or lower. Many people will leave when they find out that you want them to buy something. Tragic, I know.

I see, so it also depends on the niche of the site ...I thought the numbers alone are precise indications

    thanks for the additional info

Around 25 - 30% would be fine. However, as they have said, it'll depend on the niche of your site. :)

I have a bounce rate of 67% for one site at #1 on Google, and a bounce rate of 38% and a ranking of nowhere for another site, so I would suggest that bounce rates can vary a great deal depending on your niche.

    Hi

The bounce rate depends up on the product / service u offer and the optimisation of you site i.e, Visitors landing pages .you should optmise your landing pages with relevant content what the user is searching for.For some of SEO 20% and for some even 50-60% is acceptable

Commercial websites normally present larger bounce rates than non commercial ones. I tend to believe that this is one of the points that Google is using to serps.
