As a Sikh I believe the purpose of human life as being the chance to finally merge back with God. Our soul is a part of God and that lives forever and having been through countless incarnations, we have finally got the gift of the human body and this is our chance to get out of this cycle of life and death and merge back with the creator.

So what happens to me when I die is dependant upon my actions in this life. Good Actions and remembrance of God will lead for my soul to get closer/merge with God. Bad actions would mean us carrying on in this cycle of life and death.

A friend of a friend died today, complications from chronic emphysema.
In answering your question Is there a heaven? I don't think there is.
People may see that as being cold but it isn't, It's being honest about
who we are and looking after your well being. My main reason in not
believing in heaven and god is based on life forms with DNA/RNA like us
that can perform binary fission, that is split in to two separate lifeforms
from the one body. (eg flatworms, bacteria etc) Another reason is that
plants live and die as DNA/RNA lifeforms (like us) but don't facilitate a

conscience or higher intelligence. My tomato bush got frost bite a while
ago and has since shriveled up and died. I cant contemplate it going into
a heaven as an angel as they say in Christianity. The lessens that life
has taught me is to love and respect nature, yourself and your neighbor,
be positive as a person and maintain a healthy existence. Be responsible
ethical and moral, and contribute something positive to the world. If you
follow these things and make it to seniorship then you at least know that
you justified your existence and spent your life wisely. :)

It depends on what I have learned in this lifetime. If what I have learned was relevant to the reason why I chose this particular lifetime, then I will either reach nirvana or I will step on to the next lessons in a new lifetime. If I have wasted this lifetime, then I may have an even worse one.

If I were to die tonight, I would do four things.

    1. Have sex with a girl.

    2. Drink my favorite beer (Fosters) and take a couple of swigs of Jack Daniels.

    3. Read a book.

    4. Tell every one of my family members that I love them.

That's it baby - now I'm ready to kick some ass in heaven. :D

I have the flu. If it's all the same, I'd have preferred to die LAST night.

According to the Bible nothing would happen. The 'spirit' or energy that animates your cells (spark of life) dissipates, and your body expires. No thoughts, no judgment (right now), nothing. Just waiting

In other news.... plenty of people have died and been brought back.

Ironically, most near death experiences differ along the lines of the person's particular religious beliefs. Example.

Given these facts, I offer you Occam's Razor.

"If you have two theories that both explain the observed facts, then you should use the simplest until more evidence comes along"

"The simplest explanation for some phenomenon is more likely to be accurate than more complicated explanations."

"If you have two equally likely solutions to a problem, choose the simplest."

"The explanation requiring the fewest assumptions is most likely to be correct."

Ok then, according to Occam's Razor I can conclude that something happens since these people had some sort of experience. Beyond that of course I would just be making shit up.

I see a good few here believe in reincarnation and escape from the wheel of suffering, I personally want to come back. I want to be a human and come back over and over. The only thing I can imagine that would be better than that is to become pure consciousness and be able to see and experience even more of the universe than this shabby bag of flesh and bones lets me see. I hate sickness and suffering just as much as the next person but I wouldn't give it all way in exchange for the joy and pleasure I have gotten so far. Just the depths of feeling we get as humans is worth it all to me.

Actually I have to disagree and ask how you can conclude that using Occam's Razor.

"The explanation requiring the fewest assumptions is most likely to be correct."

Which is simpler/requires the least assumptions (faith)?

All these people have different stories and experiences because there is no single experience we can all count on after we die.

Or all these people had different experiences, but never mind that.... we all go to the same heaven just like one particular (which one?) religion describes it.

Add on to that the fact that all these people had different experiences based on their particular religion and that introduces a plethora of possible explanations, all discounting the idea of a single heaven for all mankind.

    1) Their particular religious programming caused their specific experience within their mind. (most likely IMO)
    2) They lied because they wanted it to be true.
    3) They lied because they need attention or wanted fame.
    4) They believe what they saw was real, even though it was all in their mind.

Even if you try to use it to conclude that "something" happened, as you stated, the fact that nearly everyone that has an NDE has a different experience (some none at all) makes the simpler less assumptive answer that nothing happened.

Good news, you can! All you have to do is convince yourself that something that you couldn't possibly prove to be true (whether it is or not, we don't know) is true.

Or in other words. Just "take it on faith" that it's true.

How simple and cool is that?

You stated something happened. An experience. To assume "in your opinion" an outcome is not the way I was taught science and I don't think it is the spirit Occam's Razor was intended for. If I was to use any of your suggested conclusions I would be introducing some sort of opinion. I cannot conclude that there is no single experience we all partake of after death for sure. These people came back. They were clinically dead and what we consider "dead" has and will change. I have no idea if they lied or not, I would hope the study had controls for that sort of thing. As for "it was all in their mind" I would doubt your eyes would work very well after death so I suppose that the brain would be the last organ functional, of course I think it is kind of oversimplifying to equate the mind and the brain as the same thing. We actually have not quantified exactly what constitutes the mind yet. Psych majors are working on it I suppose.

I personally am not really concerned enough with an afterlife to take that leap of faith and I don't see any reason to do so. I don't believe in a God who will send me to a fiery dark pit (how is dark with all the fire?) for not praying five times a day or being dunked in a lake. Of course if doing those things works for someone else I don't mind but I do not feel like I need fear to be spiritual and I don't feel like I need to be concerned with an afterlife when this life is pretty fulltime.
