Blogs Vs Forums - Which is more SEO friendly ?

Other facotrs being equal (give or take), does a blog post or a forum thread would score in SEO just because it belongs to that genre ?

I have heard that the %/postname%/ permalink structure in blog is considered more SEO friendly, but I observed that all the forums follow the default /?p=123 post format, so does that gives an edge to blogs over forums ?

    Anyone observed this ?

It really depends on the setup. You can set up a forum to be super-SEO-friendly, and you can do the same for a blog.

You don't observer carefully . Many forums have a static and search engine friendly url .
Blogs can be small and middle scale .
Forums are usually more larger scale than blogs with many active members .

Can forums compete with one page websites? Is it difficult to set up affiliate links within a post? And is there ad software for forums? With a forum wouldn't you also have to fit your content (SEOed info) into one post? Maybe that will make your pitch shorter and more to the point, but It would seem that with forums other posts might conflict and throw off the PR.

Does anyone on here make money from affiliate links in a forum?

Thing about forums is, your users are the ones supplying the content. With blogs you have much more control.

Problem is, even if your forum, has SEO friendly URLs, it only helps a little bit, because I believe Google and other search engines tend to priorities forums as lower quality (because of their more informal content).

Forums are not meant to be ranked high by google except in certain situations.

Like if someone was searching for "adwords tips about keywords", this forum may come up, but something about "adsense placement" a blog may come up.

SEO friendly urls will also slow down your forum significantly.

It really depends on the work you put into optimization, not the actual content platform itself. Both a blog and forum can succeed in the rankings.

I would say a blog is more seo friendly. Their setup is very structured and they automatically put your page title in key seo areas on the page. The title is usually even in the url of the post. You have total control.

A forum on the other hand can really only be optimized through it's template. The keyword usage in thread titles & post content is just up to users. Most forum software is not seo friendly out-of-the-box. Many pass session ids through urls and some pass more than 2 variables in the url. Forums often have thousands of external links, especially if you allow profile urls and/or signature links. So this may be a drawback too.

A popular forum can make an seo's job easier though. With the members creating the content, you can sit back as more and more entrance pages get added each day. Some of those threads will naturally match some longtail keywords.

Forums are difficult to get the initial boost but when it does the content is auto generated but for blogs it has easy to start but then maintaining that for good content would be definitely restricted where as wiki would be what I would prefer than blog.

Blogs are more seo friendly as we have control over the posts . In Forums, in most cases we can't control the content considering many factors..
