Several domains for the same website!

I saw many times the situation when several domains are used for the same website. A common sense can be easily understood when for example different domains are used to demonstrate website pages are presented in several languages! But personally I don’t understand for which purposes the same website is made available under different domains in other cases? What advantages can be taken from displaying a website under different domains?

One possible use could be to occupy different extensions (domain TLDs) for one of your domain. For instance, if you domain name is digitalpoint.com then you might be interested to buy digitalpoint.net and digitalpoint.org and then park it on the same domain where digitalpoint.com is hosted. This is quite a common practice.

You have main domain name ad redirect all traffic you get on other domain names.
Increasing number of domain names - increases traffic. That is the main idea.

In order to get traffic from other domains these domains should be well-promoted in web. I see no difference between promoting 1 domain or several domains! For example when promoting website you can have 10 incoming links for 1 domain or have 2 domains for website with 5 incoming links for each one. What is the difference?

The work starts with developing domain names and then owner put them together and get good traffic on the main web site.
    Old trick by the way.

you would obviously be concentrating on one domain..making sure it gets good visitors and stuff..but you would at least secure your domain name in all TLD's to protect you brand name..and what good can you do of those domains other than pointing them to the main one?

Yes, I agree, multiple domains can play an important role for brand protection, however, I think it is not impossible to protect brand fully acting in such a way! For these purposes it is better to hire a good lawyer!

If you, for example, register 3 domains for one website you will have to promote all these domains in web! Nevertheless, you can buy 1 domain only and concentrate all the efforts on this domain only!

It would be a bad idea to put the same website on multiple domains because you would get a duplicate content penalty from Google. Best just to forward the other domains to the main site.

Yes, I agree with you Dreamerr! Google dislikes domain redirects, url forwardings etc! Website owners can protect their brand a bit, but Google rankings will go down as a result!
