Benefits, better lifestyle, transport, food, health etc etc. The list goes on. People will always want to come to Britain as opposed to poorer countries.
I rember a couple years back it was spoken of somewhere that Wolverhampton and some other place will become the first 2 locations within the UK to have white british people as a minority within the city. In birmingham unless using the express way or a helicopter, from where i live you cant reach the city center without passing through an asian neighbourhood. Half the bus drivers are polish, they are unable to tell you how much fare to pay. Saying that though, us brits are made up of centuries of being invaded, by the romans, the german barbarians, the vikings etc etc No wonder britain ruled most of the world at one point, it was kinda in the blood to do so after all those invasions. Still amazes me how a tiny island took over all those countries in the past.
Tax exiles too, have you noticed how billionaires from around the world come and settle in london for a while? Russians, Arabs etc, on the run from corruption and death and huge taxes and the mafias of their world, lol
Because they fly over to get a better education, and accreditation from top universities. Let's just say WE OWN.
I think many of these things are sort of "by common consent" and fairly understandable. But I think anyone's who's done any travelling in other European countries with their largely co-ordinated transport policies and largely subsidised prices is going to have a really difficult time believing that the UK is anywhere higher than bottom in the "transport league"! (That certainly seems also to be what independent review publications both online and in the print and broadcast media think, too.)
Actually fewer than 15% are foreign, overall, Mikey, if you look at the official figures from the Department for Education.
I was referring to my uni - my observations are Manchester based. I'm sure places like Cambridge, Durham etc etc are different.
Yes, 35% really is a lot. This speaks very highly of UK University educational standards but perhaps not so well of UK school standards. I suspect that Exeter University, which is a pretty big one, is far more well-known in other countries for its academic reputation than most UK universites are, and perhaps attracts a disproportionate percentage from overseas as one or two others do. Universities tend to do much better out of the fees from overseas students, too, of course.
Cambridge is very different from many others, because it has by quite some margin the highest proportion of postgraduate to undergraduate students. The last time I looked, it was actually nearly 50/50, which is very remarkable. It attracts many top first-degree graduates worldwide, especially to do one-year and two-year postgraduate diplomas/degrees. There's a sort of indirect correlation there, because in reality where there are large numbers of postgraduate students, there are large numbers of overseas students (and that's partly for financial reasons). This applies especially to Cambridge, because some of the world's best first-degree graduates who can afford it are very enthusiastic to spend a year or two there in ways they wouldn't necessarily be at many other UK universities.
Alexa, you sound like you are getting your posts from the internet somewhere are you a university student yourself?
Jon, exactly what is your problem with me?! Why do you have to question everything I post? First you accuse me (wrongly) of stealing someone else's photo, and now you're apparently suggesting (equally wrongly) that I'm not even writing my own posts?! I'm getting really tired of reporting your offensive posts and requesting their deletion, here. What is your problem, for God's sake? Do you just get off on insulting and offending people? Or do you have some sort of insecurity around women, or what?!
Nope no insecurity, and also if you read my post you will see I put a face with the tongue out at the end. This means its a joke. I was commenting on how professional your posts sound! I feel it is very rude of you to come on here (as a newbie) and start creating posts as above, accusing others of being rude when they are reputed members who are not being rude! If you are so tired of the posts I suggest you leave the forum!
Users of this forum are not so naive as to fall for the "make insulting comments impugning people's honesty and then when someone complains, point to the smiley and say it was all a joke" game, Jon. It's not original, and it's not pleasant, and it's rude. I have a strong hunch that you'll be the one leaving, Jon, not I.
I am going to be the bigger person and ignore you! Anyway, how is business going for everyone? We are a few weeks from launch, getting a press release written and software installed on our server!
LOL, thank you, doc. My namesake who measures the traffic isn't up to much, actually: she only monitors a small, self-selected group who have been there, done that, got the t-shirt and downloaded the poxy toolbar.
