My most sucessful strategies is to make a website about a future product. For example, an upcoming game. When a game is not released there isn't many fan sites for it. That means you have a better selection of domains to chose from. All of the popular domains are still available for example, (xyzgamenametitle)forum.com or (xyzgamenametitle)blog.com. Likewise, as your domain ages it boosts its ranking. Age of the domain generally means more established compared to new domains. You'll also rank easier since there isn't as many other websites competiting for that keyword (yet).
