Threads in "Solicitations & Announcements"

Should be ordered by age of threads, not after who posted their last time as default. WHy? Because that way it will be easier to grab all new directories, I had to go to page 3 to find all 5 new directories since last time I checked(13 hours ago or something).

This would also be the nail in the head for threadbumpers and therefore also applicable in the Buy&Sell section.

I think it's a bad idea. Reject it.

I agree with EGS, bad idea. The forum should stay uniform in how it's sorted.

Can you explain why it's better the other way?

Just advanced search and sort by Thread start date.

Doesn't work if you don't input a search term.

latehorn, I have the solution for you. Do like me.

I subscribe daily to that forum section, so I get an e-mail with new threads once a day. Then I have a rule in outlook so that those mails get sent to a specific folder.

This way I get all new threads in a folder automatically.

EDIT: I have done that for more than half a year, I have not missed 1 thread.

I still actually have all the e-mails from february 26, 2006. About 100 e-mails. Let me know if I should arrange a zip file.

Say you start a thread giving away free stuff.
In the next 8 hours, 50 other people start a thread.
Boom...you are way back there, no one will find you.
If someone does, and posts to the thread, it stays way back there.
Not helping you or people on the forum.

Some people do abuse the bump the thread.
Maybe have some limit to how many times you can bump your own thread would be best.
Or not allow bumping at all?

sorting by date will lead to a Solicitations & Spamouncements forum
with people creating new threads all the time for their directories when they created one 2 days ago...

See latehorn, maybe you can think next time like this guy did before suggesting such a bad idea... :)

I bump my threads, but I do it respectfully - usually only once every 24 hours which is perfectly reasonable.

    I still agree latehorn's Idea.

    Not a Bad one.
Not the whole forum but the Solicitations and announcements forum threads should be acc. to date :)

Hmm, I don't use my mail anymore since I get 30 spam mails everyday.. can open a new email account for directory threads but this regular administration is a waste of time. So it's not the ideal solution for me.

Ok, I know you don't like it but can you explain why? Perhaps it is because you want to be able to bump you own threads to push other threads down. But your threads will dissappear from the first page after a few hours because of everybody else that bump threads.

If they create a thread for a similar subject that already have been posted, they deserve a ban.

My suggestion was specifically for the Solicitations & Announcements section. The idea was to help directory submitters in beeing able to submit new sites much faster. It will however be bad for those who bump their own threads, not those that don't do. Every directory will get equal attention.

I've done the same at a great many forums, and it's why I love vB - it makes my life so easy. I ignore the updated section and focus on the new threads. The only diff is I set it for weekly updates so I don't get inundated.
I use spamassassin on my accounts that aren't with gmail. Talk to your webhost about what filtering is available.
That's what the yellow card/ red card infraction system is for.

It would be nice to have both, then we could see which method works best. And by that, I mean having a way to view the same forum by thread date and by last post date. I have no idea how easy that would be to implement, though.

Thanks Sarah. I really must pay more attention to these options at the bottom of the page! I tend to filter them out and just concentrate on what is being written.
