Can Subdomains Rank High?

Is a subdomain at any kind of disadvantage as far as ranking high in the SERPS? Everything I've read states that search engines treat subdomains as completely different sites (if they are not interlinked with the main site), so does that mean they have the same chance of ranking well?

I'm about to make a bunch of affiliate sites that are more about organic traffic than branding or repeat visitors.

    I'm thinking

    affiliatekeywords.genericdomain.com

Anyone see any issues with this?

I understand all that, but these are throw away affiliate sites. I don't care about branding. i just need the facts. Does a search engine see a subdomain any different from a normal one?

Also I hope that's your article that you pasted.

subdomains should be able to rank as high, but it is confusing as some sites use subdomains as sections of there websites e.g weather.cnn.com

imo it is possible to rank well on subdomains, i often find xx.wordpress.com sites in my SERPS, but not many other subdomains. But this is due to the fact that the novice/begginer is generally associated with a sub-domain, hence why they don't rank well. If you put effort into it, you could.

Although i've got no evidence from G on there view of SubDomains, maybe if somebody could post this?

I think a strong "www.domain.com" website which will have in the future subdomain , this subdomain will eventually get some of the regular domain power.

only if you link to it from the main domain.

but they rank just fine with decent links. (im not guessing) ;)

I'll give it a go. My aim is to have tonnes of unrelated affiliate sites (no that doesn't mean scraped content) on a subdomain of a generic domain like biz45er.com, with the main domain not even being used directly. And none of the sites will be interlinked so they will all act as separate sites. E.g.

    golfshoescoupons.biz45er.com
    realestateguide.biz45fer.com

If anyone thinks this is a bad idea or that I'll have trouble ranking them please speak now else I'll come back and cry 3 months from now!

Thanks a lot for the help so far, I appreciate it.

well. the rankings obtained will be entirely dependent on quality of the links at them and the difficulty of the niche.

there is a theory though that a www.domain.com will have strong chance of being the no 1 spot compare to subdomain/pages.

I don't know about the accuracy of this theory because I never tried it

Obviously yes, but I just want to be assured that it won't put me at a disadvantage to begin with just because it's a subdomain?
