I'm currently #1 for my specific keyphrase in Google, and have been for at least 12 months. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what I should do (or should not do) to keep it that way? I'm tempted to contact people on page 3 and 4 of G's results and do a link exchange. But I figure it will probably help them more than it will help me. ???
Hi, if you got backlinks from all page3 and 4, then you would get about 20 related backlinks But each of them only get one backlink from you. Then what do you think who will be more benefited?
Donot stop your optimization work. Regularly work more for relevant backlinks. Its very hard to stay on top. Competitors always watch you and definitely try to beat you.
You got there somehow, so just keep up what you are doing. You are probably correct in thinking that a link exchange with page 3/4 sites will benefit them more. However you could get them to give you more than you give them using the fact that you are the #1 site as leway.

I would suggest continuity of your optimization works and sticking with it factor would determine your position on SERP
Stay away from reciprocal link exchanging (unless you want to end up in the Basement) Google frowns upon it. Obtaining one-way relevant links with your targeted keywords in the anchor text is definitely your best option. You want to build your links on a slow and steady basis, as that is what is most natural to Google. When I set up a project with LinkVana (my favorite Link Building service), I will set it up so that my links are added at a rate of between 2-5 per day
Continue to build backlinks for the site. And do some keyword research to find if you can also capture some more traffic by optimizing for other 'similar' keywords. Long-tail traffic often gets more sales.
